A word of caution to others .
I needed a new front disc and pads so after much deliberation i ordered a set from a well known supplier off the internet. parts arrived next day and were duly and carefully fitted to my bike. I took the bike out and carfully bedded the pads and disc in, only problem is right from the start the front disc became intermitantly graby and very hard to use smoothly , only way i can describe this is if you held the lever steadaly the brake would grip then slip then grip again and it would keep on doing this . I cheked out the disc and the only thing i could see that may cause this was machining marks running acrross the disc that compared to other disc rotors ive had seemed quiet pronounced, all running in the same direction so they would pass thruogh the pads cross grain for the first part revolution then end grain for the next , whitch to my mind could be the culprit for the problem.
Next step phone up the supplier. i explained what the problem was and mentioned that when i installed the parts i had used a disc brake cleaner( same stuff i have used for years ) in case there was any machining oil on the disc, BAD move i was told by the supplier that the reason the new rotor wasn't working properly was because i had contaminated it with oil that is in the brake cleaning aerosol so there for was my fault and nothing they would do , send the rotor up to us and our technicians will look at it . I got a very distinct impression that if i sent this rotor back to them i would be left high and dry, maybe a bit of interest in the problem , instead of some kind of interrogation and being shouted down at every point that i made would go a long way . The rotor is now hung up in my shed above the workbench as a reminder not to try and save a bit of my hard earned money by buying this shite .
And we all know who i am talking about.
Contamination from Oil in brake disc cleaner, that's a new one!
are you warning us not to let you clean our discs?
i can guess it sounds like the same lot i had probs wiht when i got new forks that clunked straight out of the box, sent it back they said nothing wrong with them and they still clunked sent to tf and came back perfect as the replaced some broken seals. I understand stuff will get through QA in a factory so why wont sellers get this, suffice to say i got in touch and got my dosh for the service out of them after a few weeks
never thought of that one Ive had enough of my own discs for one week thanks
Funkymonkey - sounds like he has used car disc brake cleaner or at least the supplier of the pads thought so? - it has oil in it, and shouldn't be used on bike brakes.
If it was bike disc brake cleaner then the retailer is having a laugh.
Still it's not the most expensive mistake to make.
Oh, and get some meths - it's cheap and it'll clean the rotor up nicely and you can refit it to your bike.
I use some peach schnaps I brought back from Austria. It's vile drinking but a good cleaner.
not convinced that meths is a good idea for rotors.
Car brake cleaner is a big no-no.. f*cks bike discs bigtime. Trust me, I know. Clutch cleaner works nicely though, much more volatile stuff - evaporates straight away.
Edit: Meths works very well indeed actually.
If they'd said that to me I'd have told them not to take the pi55 because Isopropyl Alchohol is an accepted non-contaminating cleaner, and if they try to pull a fast one like that I'd be talking to trading standards. Meths is also non-contaminating, as is all other cycle brake cleaners
some disc brake cleaners do contain oil. Check on the label of your can. If it does not contain oil then tell the supplier, return the goods and ask for your money back
Sounds like an octoporn excuse
I've never seen a brake cleaner that genuinely does contain oil... Funnily enough any time i ask in these threads, neither has anyone else, they know that some do but they've never met any. It only seems to be mountain bikers who believe in it though.
Which of the rotors was it? Any chance of a pic? Remember that they're a rebrander so you can find the same parts under different names, frinstance the superstar "wave design" is the same part as the Tektro wave rotor, which I use myself and definately doesn't give any of these issues. It's sold under various other names too.
TBH I'd take your incoherent rant a bit more seriously if you'd actually done as they asked and returned it, and also not gone through the motions of pretending to hide the company details then signing off "we all know who I'm talking about"- maybe you've got a legitimate beef but you're not going about things the right way if you do.
Who are we talking about?

I agree, why just assume that nothing will be done if they've offered to have a look at it? As a consumer you're still protected. Running to STW before they've even had chance to rectify the problem is a bit lame.
