I'm hoping that one of the many IT experts on here might be able to help: When I download short videos from my still camera on to my PC they play back very jerkily. Videos from an older camera are OK, as is YouTube etc. Any ideas? The PC is quite old, but I think it has a decent graphics card and a reasonable amount of memory.
Download VLC player and try and play them with that. It uses your existing hardware more effectively than say windows media player.
Decrepit PC struggling to play HD videos by any chance?
Mine struggles with 720p stuff, despite dual-core and 4GB of memory and "quite good back when I bought it" graphics card.
That's a good point, I think the videos are HD ......
Change you video card
I think the videos are HD
That'll be the issue then. Low res ones from your old camera or YouTube will play fine - but full HD can mean decrypting and displaying 1920×1080 pixels at 24 frames a second (minimum) - that eats a fair bit of memory, needs a decent graphics card and fast hard drive.
Can I convert these videos to lesser resolution after they've been saved onto my PC?
Never tried it but this looks like a good bet:

Thanks gentlemen, I'll try both those options this evening.
