If you were a horse owner, why can you not back your own horse to win? I don't get what harm it could do?

What makes you think an owner cannot back their horse to win?

If you are referring to the Findlay case, he was betting his horses would lose and the reason that is not allowed are fairly obvious.

I think its traditional for an owner to put quite a sizeable bet on his horse to win.

To bet on it to lose is understandably illegal, this is the only outcome you could control/guarentee!
