Slightly shocked someone thought this would be a good idea.

Both trailers are funny. I'll probably watch it as the originals were almost as daft as the TV series (which I can't find on any streaming services).

It'll be properly daft, childish humour and I'm going to be laughing a lot, but it isn't clever humour, just daftness.

I like Liam Neeson a lot in his safe but solid action movies. He's probably very well cast for this - but I find that sort 'naked gun' humour more irritating than funny.

So I guess it will be down to the writing as to whether its good or not.

His Cameo in Ted (2, maybe?) is very funny.

I sort of like that Liam Neeson is doing it, I choose to believe it's because he was a fan of the original.

Not sure I'll watch it though, for fear it won't be as good as the originals

(in other news, some sort of embargo appears to have been lifted on Stephen King movies, three new ones coming out including the Long Walk and a remake of The Running Man)

It’ll be interesting, the trailer looks ok.

Didn’t know there was an embargo, there has been loads of news on The Running Man for months.

A segment I saw looked awful, Liam was just not funny at all and no timing that might make it funny.

The trailer looks somewhat OK so let's hope they didn't take all of the few decent bits from the movie to make it.

Good! I wonder whether they'll have the balls to play it close to the book, or turn it into some YA thing or a happy clappy version. It's a book that weirdly has really stayed with me for decades now; and The Mist really showed that done right, lesser known Stephen King can be absolutely cracking as films

So will you be accompanied by your other half to the cinema? "On your own" was the response I got on showing the trailer. 😆

Yeah no I was just referring to 3 of them suddenly coming out at once, not an actual embargo.

Clearly out of touch, first I heard of it was last week 😄

Liam was just not funny at all

I guess Leslie Neilson wasn't cast because he was a funny guy - his job was to play the role straight while funny things happened around him - he'd appeared in all the shows (Kojak, Ironside, Hawaii Five-O and so on) that Police Squad parodied. I think the problem is we've already seen that joke and things are funny because they're a surprise, it's hard to be surprised by the same thing twice. But its also possibly mis-cast because its a parody of a role that Neeson isn't particularly associated with - he's not really the first person you think of for run of the mill Police Procedurals - there needs to be more to it than just sharing the same initials.

The original series was Police Squad IIRC.

The shame is too many people don't want to - remakes/sequels/franchises make don't make up the majority of films made but they do make up the majority of films watched. Roughly half of Hollywood output is original content but 80% of its income comes from existing IP. 86% of the top grossing films from the last 25 years were films that were parts of sequels and franchises.

The golden age for original content was the late 90s - before that it was all about sequels and it has been since too - a funny blip happened when Multiplex cinemas appeared that made interesting and original films much more viable for a bit then the way those cinemas were operated changed and it was back to same old same old

a remake of The Running Man

It's not really a remake.  The Arnie movie had the square root of jeff all to do with the book aside from sharing the same title.  The new film looks to be more faithful to the source from what I've seen in the trailers (and what I remember from reading the book in the early 90s).

Mind you some originals can be remakes too. For 'Airplane' Abrahams, Zucker and Zucker just took an existing films script and added gags to it.

I expect it will be funny but I also think that so many things that were original and very funny in Police Squad have become ingrained into our consciousness that they won't be that funny any more.

I can't remember the last time someone in real life said "Surely you can't be serious"* without someone replying "I am, but don't call be Shirley". I think it has removed "Surely you can't be serous from all future serious conversations.

Equally "Nice beaver", " Doctors say he's got a 50-50 chance of living, though there's only a ten percent chance of that.", "Cigarette? - Yes, it is", "I'm Sure That We Can Handle This Situation Maturely, Just Like The Responsible Adults That We Are. Isn't That right, Mr... Poopy Pants?"

*Surely you can't be serious is actually from Airplane I think but you know what I mean

I'm not so sure as I'd agree, you know.  Neilson was exceptionally good at being funny whilst remaining utterly deadpan.  He was notorious for stunts like bringing whoopee cushions to talk show interviews.  If the interviewer could hear it but the audience couldn't then so much the better.

It's a "wait for streaming" movie for me.

Far from being the most pointless or offensive remake of the 21st century though.

Pretty sure I heard Kermode recently saying that Zucker and Zucker actually subsequently bought the rights to the original film in order to avoid any issues with IP etc

So many classic lines. And all the stuff that happens in the background. Funny in so many ways.

Doctor! We've got to get these people to a hospital!

A hospital? What is it?

It's a big building with lots of sick people in it, but that's not important right now!

Forced fed this as a kid and sometimes an Airplane! comment is automatic.

It's not called Airplane! in Aus though - was called Flying High here as there was a movie called Airport 1975 out around the same time.

Many years ago - he's now a 22 year old Scout leader - MCJnr had his first night at Beavers and was awarded Billy the Beaver to take home for the week for doing so well on his first night.

As my son proudly ran up to me holding a toy beaver my immediate reaction was "Nice beaver!" The mums picking up their little darlings were mortified, the dads had to hide their laughter.
