MegaSack DRAW - 6pm Christmas Eve - LIVE on our YouTube Channel
I am traveling to Glasgow from the SE of England tomorrow, to attend a funeral on Friday morning.
I intend to stop off somewhere near Dumfries to break the journey up.
There is no time for biking or walking, just looking for a recommendation of somewhere reasonably priced with decent food and beer.
I do like old style Inn's, with a decent bar, rather than Hotels.
Any suggestions?
Bump!
There must be someone who can recommend a place in that area!
I wouldn't bother staying at dumfries, you'd be heading up the M74 and dumfries is off the motorway, i thought about moffat but you're only an hr from glasgow so i wouldn't bother stopping. Get a hotel in Glasgow or if you insist on stopping then try the Balmoral in Moffat.
I stayed here on a fishing trip once......
Only a wee drive from the M74 just west of Lockerbie. It was a few years ago but looking at the site it has the same owners & it was really good then.
HTH.
The hotel at Mabie is good and reasonably priced .
A bit further on but great place to go biking...

I've stayed there with work twice. Rooms basic but good beer, decent food and the landlord will give you directions to some brilliant scenic trails.
Doh - NO time for biking. Read that wrong. Still a nice place to stop.
The Somerton House Hotel at Lockerbie gets quite a decent name. Only about 2mins from the A74(M). There's a couple of others in Lockerbie as well but don't really know them these days.
Good beer, great food and staff - 2 mins off the M74, and it'll take you less time to get back to the motorway than in the morning.

Easy!
I'd be tempted to come off the motorway at Kendal and stay there as like Somafunk said by the time you are at Dumfries you're almost at Glasgow. In the time taken getting from the motorway to the town you'd be on the outskirts of the city!
Again I'd say Carlisle. Dumfries is not that far off Glasgow. Which bit of Glasgow are you at?

I've stayed there. Agree.
For convenience it would need to be Lockerbie or Moffat. But if you like wee local places then they 10 minute drive from Lockerbie to the Hightae Inn would be my recommendation. Really good food and an excellent range of beer, whisky and gin. Beware though, the owner is an excellent salesman when it comes to getting you to have just one more dram.
