GF and I want to go bivvying in the next few weeks, but as it'll probably be our one and only time going (certainly for the next few years!) we were kind of hoping some nice person out there might be able to lend / hire us a couple of mats and bivvys?

V cheeky request I know, but seems a bit daft to buy them for one night!

I will await your derision at the futility of my request 😉

I've got a Gore-tex bivvy bag and a mat Mrs F. Its been used all of twice. You're welcome to borrow those.

In fact: we're riding Blackstone Edge on Thursday night. Its about half way over to you lot. Fancy joining us and I'll give them to you then

Very kind of you binners. What time are you meeting? I'm probs too slow for a group ride these days (well depending on if Hora's joining you or not 😉 ), but GF may well be able to make it over.

"Cheeky request"

I thought MrsFlash might be offering to share a bivvy, in order to keep warm... 🙁

The Enigma will indeed be out, so the pace will be 'social' to say the least.

We'll be going for the usual 7.30 for 7.45 start. Not seen you or GF for yonks. It'd be good to get out. Actually... best go and put my lights on charge.

I've got one bivvy bag and two mats. So you're just a bivvy bag short

Hmmm, what sort of distance you doing? I've not been out with a group for a while so not sure what my pace is like compared to un-preggo me really. I shall speak to himself and see 🙂

Talkemada, believe me, you wouldn't want to share unless you happen to like sharing with someone who gets up for many wees, and snores & farts a lot 😉

if it's dry / condensation isn't an issue then a bivvi bag isn't needed (esp with a synthetic bag) and bracken etc can be more comfy than a ground mat... improvise, it's the ray mears way )

Its not a biggee (its us after all). We're starting from the Hollingworth lake visitor centre car park. We go up over to the White House, along the edge (bit cheeky) then the great descent through the pylons down to the conveniently located pub for post-ride cocktails. Not far. Two hours max (even with Hora)

I've also got an ultralight sleeping bag that is warmer than it has any right to be considering the size it packs down too. This has been used the grand total of once. Can you sense the feeling I never really embraced the whole bivvying thing 😉

Actually it was more to do with last summer being so crap

I have a bivvy bag and mat you can borrow, Royton, close to Hollingworth lake.

Also working in Leeds this week and commuting back via M62 so could drop off if you are near that route

we have bags 🙂

What kind of mileage then? I'm quite tempted.

James, we need to go in the enxt month really otherwise I'll be too fat, so I think a bag is essential.

less thank 15 miles you think? yeah, why not. I have an hour awarded at work for good behaviour, so I can always have a lie in the next day if I'm shattered.

Its definitely under 15 miles. Our night rides are always fairly leisurely affairs. Its a good route though. It'll be good to see you both - and any of your lot who fancy coming along as well. The more the merrier 😀

you may get a good dry spell tho? - i just mentioned it as when it's dry i've been more comfortable w/o a bivi bag in the past.
a waterproof bivvi bag can cause more issues than it solves when it's dry and using a down bag - breath or dawn condensation on the inside of the bivvi bag soaks the down bag (like goretex getting wet from the inside from sweat) and reduces insulation.
basically a simpler bivi can be a more comfy one, so don't think that gear always makes it more cosy - well apart from a good sleeping bag anyway ) all this was said asuming you'd be going on a dry day / night as a first trip, to avoid the miserable time that biviing in the wet can be!

anyway, enjoy the sunrise! )

Mrs GF, I am working at Regent house on Queens Street near Leeds centre, I am here all week but actually have my gear in the car if GF wants to pick it up today.

Binners - I'm still waiting for my gear to come back from Canada, I'm riding a touring bike which is ok for Boggies type rides but I wouldn't want to slow you down.

Yeah... that sounds like a plan. I'll dig out my passport

You'll need it, if you're planning to visit the People's Republic of Yorkshire.

That reminds me; must go and check if my Bradford visa and inoculations are up to date...

BTW, at least one Bivvy bag needs to be oversize to accommodate the ever-expanding MrsFlash.

Mrs GF - any hill, field, wood will do. Be prepared for not much sleep the first night out.

Still one of the best things I do though

mrsflash, if you can't afford a B&B we could always have a whip round. No need to sleep outside in a sleeping bag you know..

Hold on; Gingerflash is going to make his pregnant wife sleep outside in the wilds, with bears and wolves and hyenas and that running about? 😯

The heartless bastard. 😥

Imagine you bivv'ed in the centre of a popular doggers spot. They'd think 'oh hello, some kinky folk have turned up in giant condoms'

Fear not, MrsFlash, for I have friends in Bradford* who will be only too happy to accommodate you. They have a lift as well, although the downstairs bathroom smells a bit funny apparently.

*I know, I know; it's strange to imagine that I am this connected, but it's true. My tentacles of influence stretch further than many people might dare to think....

Oh dear. My little'un is presently sporting the 'river of snot' look. What a joy it is.

We'll be there so I'll bring the gear along. See you later

Walna Scar would give good views. There's some nice quarry hut remains on the Duddon side I liked the look of :o)

Walna Scar might be an option; I was thinking the next one along, Consiton Old Man. Great views to the east and south, for the sunrise over the sea.

Helvellyn might be good too, high up but not too far from the car.
