I have 9 days for a backpacking trip. Does anyone have any suggestions? As I live in Sheffield my initial idea was to go along the Pennine Way as far as I can and then head home by train / bus. But then I was thinking of heading to Wales and work my way from Aberstywyth to Bangor (indirect).

I've got 9 days in total(including travel at each end) and need to be no further than 10 hrs travel home by public transport for emergency purposes, does anyone have any suggestions?

Lake District for me too. One option is to jump on the train to Leeds (or Ilkley) , 4 days on the Dales Way into Bowness then 4 days around the Lake District.

The Pennine Way is do-able (and reasonably low-level), but you don't say your level of experience/fitness?

Many years ago I walked East-West coast of Scotland, thru the Caingorms, Rannoch to Fort Bill, and then straight up via Knoydart to Ullapool - many days without seeing anyone - but probably too far away for you.

If you did go with the Pennine Way and aren't going to manage the whole thing in 9 days then I'd skip the southern start..perhaps jump up to Skipton and start from there.

In terms of fitness I'm quite fit, but not done any walking for years, however I do have a high level of determintation to get through these kind of challenges and feel the Pennine way on 9 days might be doable.

Currently doing a lot of running (about 21 miles off road in my weekly long runs) but don't know how this will translate in to walking fitness carrying all my kit.

Quite like the 4 days walking through Yorkshire to get to the Lakes - the idea of getting somewhere under my own steam is quite appealing.

I fancy Wales though as mid through to North has a lot of quiet places and I'm spending quite a bit of time in the Lakes this year, although it is good

I've done the Pennine Way in chunks and it is great, but I'm more into coasts these days. You'd have a good time on the Pembrokeshire path, Cardigan round to Tenby is fantastic.
