Yeah but when it does go wrong it gets reported.
Eldest is 7.5, can't imagine him walking the half mile to school on his own now or in 6months time. There is a busy rd with a crossing but there's a 50/50 chance it'll ignore pedestrian input, plus a couple of side roads with crap sight lines.

I don't want them to end up like the stereotype mentioned above but I'll be bricking it when they head out alone

Is this not precisely because we DON'T typically let eight year olds out on their own?

There's not a snowball's chance in hell that I'd let my son, who will be eight shortly, out on his own. The traffic is the most pressing reason; the chances of abduction are no high now than they were 30 or 40 years ago but that doesn't make it any less or any more safe. Perception of risk is what has changed.
