Started to look at bit more seriously into getting a 911, something for about 12k. I've always wanted a early 80's SC but for the same money you can get a 10 year old 996. I think the SC's are much cooler but you're obviously going to have more issues with a 30 yr old car while the 996 is a hell of a lot of car for 12k.
What do you think?
Older one. 996 was a 911 lowpoint which is why they are so cheap.
Don't get a 996. 80's 911 all the way!
You want a Porsche and have a problem between air cooled and water cooled. The 911 SC had a crap radio for a reason. 😆
And if you have to think about running costs, you can't afford it. 😳
that makes sense but why a lowpoint?
Heavy, ugly, not that well made.
996 was a 911 lowpoint which is why they are so cheap.
oh please...it's just water cooled. it's not the end of the world
The 996 is silly cheap currently. I believe they have had some engine failures (see various forums). You can get the part responsible replaced but it will cost about £1200 - which I suppose is better than an engine rebuild.
Heavy, ugly, not that well made.
lighter than the 993, eye of beholder, made by same factory that makes all the others....
Looking at the price of the 70's one's i'm thinking an 80's one will also be a good investment
older one if its just a toy
Yes yes nick but care to explain the rock bottom prices of a model that otherwise hardly knows the word "depreciation."
yeah just a toy and hopefully a good investment,
i think it's got to be 80's for style
My mate has a lovely mid 80's SC in white, oddly cost around 12k, loads of work done on the mechanicals by the previous owner. My mate had it resprayed locally for another 2k, looks excellent goes like stink and is a very nice car indeed. He's had a few and seems to know his stuff told me that you have to be careful to get a good one but if you can you wont have too much trouble, they look great IMHO.
I was advised, 25 years ago, not to buy an older Porsche due to the cost of replacement engines around 2k then, heaven knows the cost now. If you want the badge 996, if you want a Porsche 911 or speedster or spyder.
[shrugs/] I dunno, I hate Porsche, I was just stirring, is all. 😀
Nowt wrong with it as a car, once it's got a rep, that's pretty much it, isn't it? same as anything else really
I have to agree with the above - the 996 is still a 911, but it's definitely not one of the stronger models. Prices may rebound in later years, but probably not as much as a 993 or 997 - the fried egg lights and slightly amorphous nose were not strong points.
Still, £12k for a 911 that's not ancient is a freakin bargain!
Stretch to a decent 3.2, don't worry to much about the gearbox, a rebuilt 915 has better ratio's than the G50.
Look out for ANY signs of tin worm, you can spend much more than an engine rebuild sorting it out, £10k + is not unheard of. Do lots of research on decent Porsche forums (probably not PH then) & have the car inspected even if you think you are a know it all, email me for more on inspectors.
Oh & the 996 drives & handles a hell of lot better than any air cooled car, it's just miss understood 🙁
60s 912.
end of thread.

A very pretty, yet very expensive Beetle, no? He's looking for a Porsche. 😉
thanks, there's quite a few forums, what's the best one?
End of thread? If you say so...
912's are shite, but may be good for the investment side.
Swiss, inpact bumper for mid 70's to late 80's
Bare in mind that most forums are 90% dross & you won't go far wrong.

Much like this one then? He'll be right. 😉
4 cylinder 911 = Beetle but...
Same car with 6 cylinders is a Porsche?
yawn...
sure it's not as fast or user friendly but closer to the original concept.
I'd probably go for a 996, but get it checked over very carefully. My fave 911 is the 964, which is not exactly held in high esteem either - shows how much I know! I'd have a 997 if I was forced to 🙂
I really have no idea about the relative merits of each model, engines, all that sort of stuff, but for me, I don't think there's anything better than the classic Porsche shape:
It's just unique amongst automotive design. Iconic. I mean, look at it; it's beautiful ffs.
I do have a particular penchant for the 80's 'Whale Tail' version, I have to say!
Bruummm!
As for the recent ones; they just lack the charisma and character of the older ones. Too tweaked, too refined, too optimised. They've lost the charisma and enigmatic quality the older ones had.
I know about aesthetics and stuff me, so pay attention.
Get an older one innit?
You know I'm right cos I'm not wrong.

Did the 912 come in the 6 cyl flavour?
Dunno, Elf, that green one looks....odd...somehow
The 996 is hugely under rated and a steal. I'd want to spend a tad more than 12k though. For me it would have to be the 3.0 SC with the later 210hp engine circa 1983. Also with the fuch alloys but without the whale tail. 12k should get a nice example. Not quite as quick as the later circa 3.2 "80's" model, but from what i gather a nicer engine, noise etc.

Wrong! That whale tail version is the epitome small cock syndrome yuppie **** asshat ****ecar. But, of course, you are entitled to your opinion 🙂
The green one is nice tho', aww, look at it's smiley front end!
Don, 912 was 4 cylinder, 911 6.
nickc, the 'green one' is stretched, thats why.
Elf, you could have found a purer image than the yank crap shown above, it shows you have no taste 😉
No no, imagine:
Pulling up at a small yet picturesque hotel in some Alpine village, arguing with the bored, tired and sullen yet incredibly beautiful perfect female example of the Aryan Master-race in the passenger seat, before getting out and nonchalantly leaning on the bonnet, smoking a cigarrette, all the while glaring disparagingly at the group of local youths trying to catch a glimpse of your frowning fraulein...
Eh? Eh?
Far classier than the modern equivalent; pull up at a Travelodge with some coked-up semi-silicone gold-digger banging on about wanting to go to Dubai because it's 'too cold here' (no way she'd even let you smoke in the motor).
Nah. Gimme the 70s dream, any day....
Wrong! That whale tail version is the epitome small cock syndrome yuppie **** asshat ****ecar.
No see you're wrong. Because you're only seeing it in a Thatcherite British context, which is blinkered and ill-conceived.
With Porsches, you've got to think German. Remember Firefox?
'Think in German'.
Don, 912 was 4 cylinder, 911 6.
I know, cynic-al doesn't. 😆 Apparently a high performance 911 is the same as a Beetle engine in a 911 body.
Might as well buy this...

Details here. 😉
Might as well buy this...
Might as well buy a Nissan if you're gonna have something as soulless as that.
Elf, I can't argue with you, I love you, and besides there is no point as you won't listen anyway 😉

this has made my night 😆

Sigh.
If only all others would see the sense in this. True wisdom.
There is no point in listening to the opinions of others, when you know you are right.
this has made my night
Well, someone has to be the arbiter of taste and style around here I spose. I'm happy that your life has, in some small way, been enhanced by this experience.
DS I'd keep arguing but. no point with a golf club type idiot...I purpose 356s are Beetles too? 🙄
Im with Elfin.
New ones make you look like someone that got 5 lotto numbers, and lacked the imagination to do anything more exciting with the money.
See? This is a person with intelligence, taste and an understanding of aesthetics, style and in fact, romance.
Not like the rest of you philistines. Think a M+S ready meal is the height of sophistication.
Loco motive; what a relief that there is at least one other intelligent person out there with a soul...
It depends on the driving experience that your after, unless you just want a 911 as your looking to spunk 12k on a new motor and fancy a cheap 911. Aesthetically for me the 911 silouette hasn't evolved so much as got bigger with age and lost some of it's original simple integrity. It was never a good looking car to start with, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Surely it's better to organise test drives of the two and see which you prefer?
cynic-al - MemberDS I'd keep arguing but. no point with a golf club type idiot
The OP was asking about performance cars and the 912, as much as I love Porsches, isn't a performance car. Neither is a 356, which I would love.
FYI I have neve been to a golf club and think that people who can only resort to insults are cockweasels of the highest order, much like yourgoodself. Besos.
To upset the Elf you have to understand the Elf, It's not hard, you just need to be a callous bastard to tip his balance.
Sorry darling 😉
No I'm eating pizza now.
well, I can "think german', if you mean, "think", I think.
Ha ha exposed your "not a Porsche" argument and upset you did I? 😀
Older model for the classic experience of looks, engine sound & smell, if you're after a Sunday drive and a tinker about.
996 for a daily drive which handles beautifully, but 'needs' the sports exhaust, short shift and a proper geo to really bring it alive.
I ran a 3.4 996 C2 daily for two years without problems and tracked it a few times too including the 'ring. But for the money I'd have the classic.

When did I say a 912 is not a Porsche? I was alluding to the fact that the OP is looking for a performance car and your suggestion was for a pedestrian Porsche which has characteristics closer to the Beetle, flat 4 air cooled.
Is it half term or something?
Did you get a little trouser bulge as you wrote your victory speech?
🙄
yeah just a toy and hopefully a good investment,
Yeah, right.
(two positive words that equal a negative)
tbh I drove a 911 a few years ago at a Jonathon Palmer trackday, just couldn't get use to the 'weight' in the back - felt unbalanced. Also drove the Nissan 350 - felt quick and safe, and then they switch the electrics off - jesus, what a handful. Fav car of the day:

Don Simon you said the 912 is a Beetle, therefore not a Porsche.
You also called me a cockweasel, so don't get all high and mighty..I appreciate your mid 50s mindset urges you to do so strongly.
