Just dropping off to sleep at 11pm last night and 3 jets went over very low and very fast. Anyideas what that could have been about? Not normal activity at all.

Not on intercept if they were low.

Well I'm about 5 miles east of dunkeld and they came right over the house very low. If the Russians were that low they'd pretty much landed!

Fly bys at the sort of height your indicating is not that unusual for your area, they occasionally like to buzz the control tower at work and I'm very close to 5m east of Dunkeld at work.

11pm is a bit more unusual, I'd guess that they are off for deployment to somewhere hot fairly soon. Or maybe the Baltics. And getting some practice in, in Northants I've seen them fly by at eye level even in the shallow valleys that area has.

Perhaps they are heading out to support the Finn's?

This time of year its getting harder to do night flying practice, so training missions get pushed to later take off times.

Skimmed over the low bit. Apparently they have been doing some low flying over the north of edinburgh a week ago so probably just more training.

I doubt it's related but we had 3 or 4 unlit heavyweight choppers flying quite low over south Cheshire at about 10 last night. Sounded like Chinooks.

Pretty much standard practice in the Borders, although not sure what they are practicing for...

If the massively detailed service/mileage record we got with our 1986 ex-RAF Land Rover is anything to go by, the jets were just nipping down to the shops for more tea bags.

I think they had their 'war games' going on in the Highlands the last couple weeks. Might still be at that.
Coincidentally I was in London at the weekend and 4 Chinooks went right overhead. I assumed they were off to get the bad giants from the BFG...
