well it tells us the rules of maths have been followed but you cannot prove its axioms- see Godel
you also get paradoxes such as Russels on sets

I'm not reading any more of this crap, but what it comes down to is:

Is that 2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2-2+2 x 0? <no brackets>
or (implied) (2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2-2+2) x 0 <ie cheating putting in brackets whereever the flip you want>
or (implied) 2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2-2+(2 x 0)? <where brackets should go according to rules>

for those who didnt go to school: implied is the big deal.

If you didnt pay attention in school - Pick A or B. Others feel free to pick C. Them is the rules.

Strangely I did really bad in school. But I got a real interest in this since!

I've manaeged to get to the age of 50 have 3 degrees (2 at Masters level) and I've never heard of this BODMAS thing before.

That's what I love about STW - you learn something new every day (most of it is utter crap though).

I still think that putting a space either side of the 'x' in the thread title and not around the '+'s implies a precedence (or brackets) that some are saying isn't there.

by the way, i [u]read[/u] the question to a mathematical type friend and he said the answer was 0. so if its on paper you can get all clever clogs with it. if you process it at each stage you cant.

Not going to read the whole thread, but the answer is 26.

For those who need a reminder back to their school years (this may have already been covered in the thread).

When approaching a calculation you need to remember BODMAS.

You approach the calculation in the following order

B - Brackets first
O - Orders (ie Powers and Square Roots, etc.)
DM - Division and Multiplication (left-to-right)
AS - Addition and Subtraction (left-to-right)

So in this sum:

B - no brackets, move on to
O - no orders, move on to
DM - 2x0 = 0, move on to
AS - 2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2-2+0 = 26.

i suspect that in the original draft there may well have been brackets in those spaces but the legal team insisted they were removed to avoid any ambiguity

I think this thread just goes to show you're an idiot if you write a sum like that and don't write the brackets in.

It's just intentionally ambiguous and should not be seen outside of maths lessons.

I remember being taught this (BODMAS) when I was 11. It's not particulary tricky. Although, in fairness, this type of sum is now normally paranthesised to cater for those not paying attention at the back.
And FWIW, 26 - IT manager

It's not intentionally ambiguous, it's perfectly clear.

But: given the failure rate for the question [b]written[/b] down, I'd probably put brackets in.

And: if you read the question to someone [b]out loud[/b], the answer would be zero.

I have to admit, speaking as a software engineer, I would ALWAYS put brackets in anything like this. Not because the computer needs them, but because I know my fellow engineers [s]are idiots[/s] may not have had their coffee when they read it ๐Ÿ˜€
