I will have one day to spend in New York in May, taking a stopover on a business trip.
Any suggestions for what to do in my 36 hours? I like art & architecture, live music in small venues, walking & cycling (obviously).
See the Empire State building at night, catch a Broadway show (half-price tickets in Times Sq for the same day performances.
Take the Statten Island ferry (free IIRC).
Find out what's on at Bowery Ballroom, it's not tiny but it's really cool and feels quite intimate. The Guggenheim combines art and architecture nicely. Statten island ferry is free, it's about 45 mins to an hour each way. There's not much on staten island but the ferry gives OK views of the statue of liberty and good views of the city, you'll get good views from some of the bridges though and it might not take as long. The rockerfeller centre ("top of the rock") is good because you can see the empire state building from it.
Island Burgers & Shakes (766 9th Ave).
The rest of NYC is a sh1thole.
Sign up to one of the open top bus sightseeing tours. See and find out all about the bits you might already know and many more you don't.
Take subway (A or C) to High Street (Brooklyn).
Walk into Manhattan over the Brooklyn Bridge.
Cheesecake at Carnegie Deli.
For live music the Limelight Club but I think its shut now.
Just come back from there a couple of weeks ago....
-Brooklyn Bridge
-Top of the Rock (the Rockafeller centre) has better views than the Empire State.
-Staten Island ferry
-Guggenheim
-MOMA
-Central Park
-Times Square
Would be my top suggestions for you. If you can fit it all into 36 hours, you've done well!
The MOMA for the art and the Guggenheim for architecture and art.
Get the Subway to lower Manhatten and do the Staten Island Ferry...free and great view of Statue of Liberty and Lower Manhatten.

Top of the Rock so you can see the Empire State.
Eat in a deli at the counter...fantastic experience.
Eat a hotdog from a street seller.
If I only had one day this is what I would do!
Oh, and take a ride on a yellow cab.
Get pished.
Thank you all.
It looks like I'll be kept busy.
I would simply buy a GreyLine Bus ticket and tour Manhatten - getting on and off the bus when I fancied a more in depth look around...
Catching the free Staten Island Ferry is also a excellent way of enjoying the Downtown View from the Hudson River.
Ive been 3 times... Go to Central Park for a lovely walk, visit Strawberry Fields, people watch etc.
im with foxychick. some really good suggestions. Lower Manhattan (Battery park is a nice area and you have brooklyn bridge and wall st area in easy walking distance).... Then Hooters on 211 W 56th st!! take a yellow cab there ๐ฏ
