Mrs Ampthill would like a 10 inch tablet. Mainly browsing and audio stuff from BBC radio app i suspect
Started googling the budget options and ended up looking at near to £200 than I expected. I was then surprised to discover that a 32Gb ipad is is £339. Which is actually less by a fair bit some of the samsung offerings. So is it worth the extra for an ipad over a budget tablet?
I'm confident that 32Gb will be enough storage. It might have some photos on it but not loads. Can't see it being used to store movies
I suppose that by spending more I'm hoping to get a tablet that will go on for longer without slowing down or dieing. Charger ports seem to be a weakness on modern devices.
So what are your recomendations? I think we're ruling out the Amazon Fire family

without slowing down or dieing
Make surecit diesnt cone with iOS 11, which has grounf my Mini mk1 to an almost halt.
The budget no recognisable name jobs do tend to have pretty poor performance and NEVER get security/OS updates.
Amazon fire is actually an ok bit of kit, I worked on it and brutalised it during testing and didn't manage to break it.
Interesting. That could replace my mini.
OK so maybe I was to fast on the Amazon Fire
I'm sure the hard ware is good. Is the inteface OK and can you get the apps you need. For example the bbc radio app?
Left field answer, but I bought the trouble an strife one of these chromebooks for £200 and have been pleasantly suprised by how good it is. More than capable as a media player and convertible touch screen as well.
I'd look at Lenovo. They are mostly standard Android, without much preloaded rubbish to slow it down. And it will probably get some updates.
Most are only 16GB, but you can add a memory card.

iPads are for wonkers....
No extendable storage. You're tied into the cloud.
I'm writing this on an iPhone and I fegging hate the thing.
Posted last week anout tablets. Despite the recommendations I went for a Lenovo Yoga 3 with 4g and 32gb. 230£. Some random company in Czech Republic.
With a 512gb iPad Pro, why would you need extended storage?
What about a 10 inch chromebook as mentioned above ?
I asked a while back on here and bought this one
Which I really like. That said I am typing this on iPad mini....
Why Iain?
I'm quite keen to look at the Chromebook replacing my mini, so your comparative review is...
I’m using iOS11 on my iPhone right now, it works fine on this, not slowed down my phone at all.
Ampthill - I believe you may work in education, if so you can probably get a £59 discount on an iPad too.
Good question. For sitting on the couch as at present, the iPad sits more easily in my hand and the screen is maybe a little more responsive, but only by a tiny margin. Having the luxury of both, I more often use the chromebook with the keyboard, which is really good, and feels every bit as good as my work laptop.
If I was to only have one, it would be the chromebook.
Ios11 is alright now. All the household devices that can run it are now upgraded and even the older ones are ok.
What I really like is that I can share iCloud now with the family. Much better value. 2tb of off site backup and storage.
get an iPad, go for a pro and it’ll last you years. Apple refurb - well worth the extra 100 for a refurb Pro over the air.
Apple discount sounds good. But I suspect that the discount will be less on the cheaper model. I can't actually find a list of discount prices. Any hints
Unfortunately not. Last week the education discount was £59 for all iPads with a free pair of Beats wireless headphones if you bought the Pro.
Worth heading to an Apple store just to find out. I’m thinking of getting a new one myself, but will probably go at half term/pay day!
I've got the Lenovo Yoga 8 inch but you can get a 10 inch. Battery life is superb, you can add an SD card, the sound from the built-in speakers has made my bluetooth speaker obsolete for R4 listening and the little stand is really useful.

Went for the Samsung a series one, ended up with a keyboard case on under a week, for browsing and any kind of typing it's what is needed. Ended up filling out a lot of competition entries on I pads recently and can't see how the touch keyboard could be more annoying.
Light chromebooks seem like a better solution these days.
Im torn between the Assus c100 above and a black Friday 9.7” ipad. I already have the keyboard for the latter as i have the same ipad for work, and bought it to use with that.
Will have to think on this a bit.
^^^ for handheld surfing I prefer the iPad mini. For anything that involved opening docs and any editing I prefer the Asus. I use google drive and docs for all my non work docs.
I recently bought an iPad Pro, much better than previous tablets I've owned (amazon fire and iPad mini). Bit unwieldy for reading in bed, etc, but excellent display, etc.
She is tempted by the chrome book

mini mk1 only updates to 9.3.5
I've got the Lenovo Yoga
Just wondering if this plays films and Netflix etc on full screen without a letterbox view eating up half of the screen?
I got a Samsung s2 and was rather disappointed to find the have changed the aspect ratio to 4:3 (seems to be the new tablet standard) which buggers up watching films and shows (mainly films) as it condenses the screen to fit the ratio. The S1 was 16:9 and played most things full screen which was great.
With the Lenovo touted as a media viewer I wonder if this is not an issue?
mini mk1 only updates to 9.3.5
Maybe its. Mk2 😀
Anyway, remembering I'd also like mine for Zwifting, I found the Acer Chromebook 15. This may be perfect with 4GM RAM and onboard graphic and of course a 15inch screen. £279, so not bad. Might get that and keep the mini for casual browsing.
As someone who has an Android phone I'd still go for an iPad as a tablet.
Is it really worth having both? I fancy a tablet/small laptop of some sort for browsing etc and I'm trying to decide what sort of size. Something with the option of a keyboard. I'm not planning to get two though! 🙂, I found the Acer Chromebook 15. This may be perfect with 4GM RAM and onboard graphic and of course a 15inch screen. £279, so not bad. Colin, have a click on my link to the Asus one, sounds like it would fit the bill.

My Mini 1 struggles with iOS10; I can't imagine it functioning on 11... I need one for work and my personal one doesn't cut the mustard anymore.
My son has an Nvidia Shield K1 which is superb.
I looked at a Samsung S3 and S2 last week. S3 was lovely but £££ but the S2 was a good iPad alternative.
I got one from here last year it's been great so far

Really? 🙄
Well, if you will buy a device with bugger-all storage in the first place...
If your mrs can stomach going without a 10” er then I can recommend ipad mini version.
I have the mini 4 and finally gave in to downloading ios11 to find it’s a bit different in that it’s going to take time to adjust to certain features.
@Kryton - do you find when listening to music in downloaded off itunes music that it goes quiet as if you’ve closed the music app down by swiping it when browsing on safari?
It seems really weird that this should occur but it happened on ios10 too if that makes any difference.
Oh and to stay on topic. The alternative offerings look tempting but ipad/apple has great useful apps that make things simpler and more efficient to complete.
Iirc mini 4 was £400 new + fancy apple £45 silicone rubberised cover, but mine is 64GB version so look around.
Cannot say that John Lewis were helpful one bit when shirtly after purchase it stopped charging and went through great difficulty to get a replacement and a new charger which bith must must have been faulty.
So choose is a £100 jobby or a £300 or so apple jobby.
I wouldn’t necessarily buy an apple priduct again due to various reasons tbh but they are fairly neat and simple in working.

I thought Zwift was Windows or iOS only? How would you get it to work on a chromebook?
We have the asus chromebook above and several ipads.
The chrome book comes out to do banking and proper shop stuff.
The iPad is easier for printing out on and taking pictures for emails.
I was in the market for a tablet but don't like the long narrow screens of some of them. That left the iPad or samsung .
I bought an iPad because even though my previous iPad was a piece of shit it still commanded a good price second hand.
You get a new iPad and you forgive apple for ****ing up your old one as it works so well. Will buy a samsung next time.
I thought Zwift was Windows or iOS only? How would you get it to work on a chromebook
I havent. Zwift will be available on Android soon.
Like ScotRoutes i really only want one device. The ipad 10” is my first choice as i already have the keyboard, but im reluctant to have it balance on a stepladder or on the bars soaked in sweat during winter turbo.
Ive done lots of research this afternoon about processors and graphics cards. Its a nightmare. Choice seems to be:
A mid spec laptop circa £400 to get an i5 processer and Intel HD graphics
An apple ipad. Or air.
A high spec dedicated chromebook such as the one Ian C linked to.
An HP Stream 14 laptop for £250 which might cope until the MS updates grind it down in a few years.
Thing is, until zwift launch the specs who knows what spec Chromebook would be required. The whole lot seems to add £400 to the setup.
I may go for the ipad and add accident insurance 🙂
Which neatly answers my next question 🙂Thing is, until zwift launch the specs who knows what spec Chromebook would be required.

Music stands are less than a tenner on Amazon...
