Went racing instead today, 1st place cat D on the 3Rs event according to zwiftpower. I'm still struggling to work the whole thing out. Got mixed up in a group of cat Cs but only realised when I finished. Just like hanging in the group with you guys.

Got dropped on the first climb today and just didn’t have the legs to get back on - I did a 2hr shift with GT yesterday, and got sucked into ‘collie’ mode trying to keep pace with the fast group on a flat course. Good fun - managed to keep ahead of G until he opened the taps a bit and blew right by with 4 mins to go.
Loving Zwift at the moment; it’s the first time I’ve ever trained properly on the bike, and I’m beginning to really enjoy geeking out with all the numbers (specially when the FTP jumps up a bit). I might give Sunday a miss as I’ve got a ‘virtual bike packing’ trip to take to entertain the kids we work with who should have been in Aviemore this weekend getting their first taste of it.

New companion app being released with meet-up enhancement, can now create meet-up in any of 6 worlds not just Watopia plus scheduled guest worlds. Should make it a bit easier to get an emptier route.

Max invites increased from 50 to 100

There was some strange stuff going on last night. One minute a rider was next to me, then way ahead then way behind!

Awesome, updated

Some may be pleased, some may be sad, but we're going to Richmond now for a flat fest.

Should be quiet, should be fast and a few sprints thrown in for Sunday.

That’s just how I roll

Full gas!!!! Fly past everyone

....Knackered...must recover

Oh no I’ve been passed and drifting off the back....

Full gas!!!! Fly past everyone

Repeat..

Accidentally HIIT training....

Morning all. Please can anyone help me with this. Yesterday on FTP builder Tempo Session no matter how high my cadence i could hardly achieve the 185 watts. I was in top gear spinning out at upto 130 rpm. Previously when we raced I have achieved (albeit very briefly) 350w.

Could it be because i haven't dared do an FTP test and have not entered and FTP number in my profile?

Thanks. see you all at 11

ps dangeourbrain thanks for the hill tip setting, I will try winding the hurt down later.

I can't help but I had similar on the ramp test, I couldn't hold the cadence to hit the required W, the 80-90 is a bit high for me, holding 120+ is just daft. I was planning on trying again with ERG turned off and see if that helped but haven't got round to it yet.

robbo - yep all the way up to top gear. An Elite Qubo

Thanks Dangeourbrain your ERG reference gave me a google clue. Just found this which suggests that you should hold your cadence and the trainer will adjust the resistance when in ERG mode. It also says the trainer should default to ERG when in a training programme. At least I now know where to find the menu with the various modes on.

Now decisions decisions a morning race or an FTP test or (probably not) both!

I think in erg mode on Zwift there is an on off switch on the icons in the bottom as well.

There's no point in mid ride weight loss on a pancake flat course

Blimey. Should have just gone for a ride in the sun, I think...

Couldn't get an invite sorted. Came out of Zwift and back into Watopia, no signal from anything - trainer, HR monitor....all dead. Restart Zwift again.....seems to be ok now.

Hope you had a good ride?

Holy Crap! At least it happened on the trainer!

Just done a tough 45mins on Sand & Sequoias....I treated the undulating bit in the trees like a stand-up sit-down spin class....

How was the group ride?

I chose to do the FTP test (short one) instead of the 2nd race. 183 score which by my calcs gives is 2.1w/kg - how does that compare with you guys? I guess losing the weight is relatively easier than increasing power?

Only been doing Zwift a month and up to 207 from 177.  This give me about 2.5-2.6.  You get a good tow from the group though, the first 30 mins is not too bad unless you do too much going with a fast group or in a sprint. Im gasping at the end though.

I’m going to add my thanks again.

Steve it is very much appreciated

Without these rides I simply wouldn’t do it. They’ve been instrumental in getting me back on a bike after nearly 2 years.

I can feel a bit of long lost fitness slowly returning also.

You could probably get that number up just by doing a few more, there is a definite knack to them.

They are grim though! Alternatively try a race that will last around 30 mins.

Edit: my FTP is 276 and I weigh 76 kg

Yeah, weeksy....organising these is much appreciated, even when it goes a bit wrong 🙂

It's definitely forcing me to try a bit harder on all Zwift rides!

Calibrated the trainer after today's session and it was a bit loose. Not sure if that makes the trainer over or under estimate.

You get a good tow from the group though

I didn't half notice when I fell out the back of the group at one point yesterday, I stopped pedaling for a second and you were all gone, had to put a serious effort in to get back on, over 400W...it was fairly speedy yesterday!

I did the Richmond UCI as a warm up beforehand and wanted to complete it but only gave myself 30 minutes before the group ride, I think I killed myself too much and didn't leave enough for the ride 🙂 Legs are feeling it today.

I'm with you on that oop north, I'm a total Zwift novice and rarely ride in a group of more than 2 on the road.  I took a breather after the second sprint and lost the group and had to push getting on 400W to get back, if it wasn't for not wanting to drop out I'd have have given up, I guess this is how you improve though.  I got on my real bike later in the day to go out with the family for our one a day and could hardly move my legs to start with.

Here's an interesting (kind of) observation I noted on the most recent meetup... My second fan (Honeywell turbo..brill) arrived in the week, so I had 2 fans blowing on me... I felt SOOOO much more comfortable, and was able to keep up higher watts for longer without becoming a floppy sweaty mess.

Reading into the science of it all, the fact that we are only 25% efficient means that for each 200w of power we make, we need to 'remove' 600w of heat. I for one ride 'really hot'..i.e unless it's sub zero temps, I wear barely anything on the bike when out and about. Thus it makes sense that performance/ability will drop off if you overheat.

The book 'Bicycling science' has a good chapter on this too. You really DO drop performance if you're too hot or dehydrated.

Anyways.... just a thought to say that there's no need to be a full on sweaty mess, and having decent fannage may add a few watts to your legs without even trying!!
