[Closed] Zero-stack tapered headset?

I have taken delivery of my new 2011 five with tapered head tube but have come up against an unexpected glitch. I have just discovered that the new bike uses a zero-stack headset. I have a tapered steer tube fork and am looking for a zero stack headset for 1.125" to 1.5" tapered forks - but they don't seem to exist???

Any ideas where to get one?

Eh?

Orange make a bike that you can't get a headset for?

I was surprised when I measured it too. Internal diameter of the head-tube is 44mm upper and 55.9mm lower (zero stack standards).

The stock bikes with tapered head tubes come with cane creek ZST25 headsets, but I can't find a stockist for them.

Had a similar problem with my Blur (mixed tapered), Cane Creek or Chris King were the only option

According to the Orange site they use a Cane creek zst25 tapered on a factory orange five. I can't find it for sale anywhere so your only option might be Chris King.

Unfortunately, Chris King don't do zero stack headsets. In fact they have a bit of a rant about it ... here

Why does it have to be zero stack? Would a normal lower race and then a zero stack top race work? Various Cane Creek headsets are available in individual races now. You can definitely buy their Double XX headset as a lower race only.

I don't know if that would work. I think you need both upper and lower cups to be designed to zero-stack specifications.

Do you know where you can get a Double XX lower race?

My Bad..

Give Orange a ring they are normally very helpful and might be able to supply the Cane Creek. Alternatively you could try hope, you can get a Hope ZS tapered as an option on the bikes. Hope list all sort of integral/ntegrated/combi headsets.

Just had a quick look on the CK webiste, are you sure it's not Inset?

The King inset 1.5 lower 1.1/8 top then a king adapter for the lower if you don't have a tapered fork steerer. It will cost you loads though.

If you find you can use a normal cup lower and inset top then this will be fine and is considerably cheaper

I think that's the same headsets as used in Trek bikes.

You should be able to order a cane creek one from a trek dealer- they're about £65, although cheaper bikes get cheaper models.

If you go to page 25 of this tech doc from FSA, headset number 57 or the Orbit 1.5ZS 1 1/8-1.5" is what you need. Again, this should be available from a Trek dealer as a spare part and will be a bit less than the Cane Creek one.

You can't put a normal lower cup in there, so the FSA one is what you need.

Cheers for the suggestions. It seems that Hope, FSA, Cane Creek, and Chris King all do appropriate headsets, although finding them is a bit harder at the moment.

I already have a Hope 1.125" zero-stack/internal headset so I may phone them up and ask if they can provide me a lower cup, bearing, and crown race for a 1.5" fork.

Hi,
I have a zero stack FSA ZS-3 headset for tapered forks and needs a zerostack headset for non-tapered forks. Any chance of a trade??

Cheers,
Dave

Well if you've got a Chris King so you must be doing alright??? 🙂

I just bought a brand new hope headset for £35 - I have it currently advertised in classifieds as I now realise it was the wrong one. So assuming this one is used then I could offer you £25 depending on condition?????

Just to check yours is the 44mm semi-integrated one right...argghhh

Not so much doing alright, just too impatient to get my new bike going with minimum faff. 🙂

The condition is that it has been pre-fitted (obviously) but is in mint condition. It is on my XC hardtail which dosn't get ridden much any more so it hasn't taken too much use. I need to remove it first, but thats not a problem as I am friendly with the LBS.

Yep, 44mm diameter. Looks like this...

How does £30 posted sound? Can take it out this weekend and post some photos if you would prefer though.

Sounds good - do you want to email me 'dredding **at* sfu *dot*** ca' rather than keep on checking the forum??

Cheers,
Dave
