I've got 3x9 on one bike at the moment but prefer the 2x10 on the other bike. So I'm considering going 2x9 as a cheaper option than getting a full new drivetrain. Can I just fit a double chainset and use the current shifter and front deraileur,by adjusting the stops. It seems it might work ,but would like to know for sure before I start messing about with it. Cheers

Yes, I did that. Takes a bit of patience setting the stops but works ok.

Works fine on my Xtc, took the opportuninty to fit an external BB and shorter crank arms at the same time.

That was fun to explain to OH, £15.00 for new cart BB or £130 for dual rings and externalBB! 🙂

THe only thing to check is the difference in chainring size you want. Most Shimano ones only cope with a 12t difference. They do 1 SLX one that copes with 14 T difference so as I wanted 22/36 I ended up buying a new front mech as the original couldnt cope.

No need for a whole new chainset, just remove the big ring and maybe change the middle one if its a bit too spinney...
