I'm a heavy rider. Want something tried and tested.
Basically I'm being offered a replacement under warranty. Lets get this straight I'm not into jumps or drops at all. However I weigh 220lb and ride mixed/rocky terrain.
Any experiences of the better damping of the XX Revelation 120-150 forks (<4lb!) or should I stick to the trusty 5.3lb coil Lyrik?
Common sense is telling me best to carry the extra lb and not be a guinea pig or risk reliability?
If you get some coil lyriks, Ill swap them for some 2006 marzocchi Z1 Lights with RC2, ETA and TAS
Tried and tested - Marzocchi reliability. Its got to be worth it!
ETA
😆
It brings a smile to my face too. 150mm to 130mm in the blink of an eye, better than winding away at a u-turn lever for 5 minutes.
I had a set of white lowers 2007 SL Z1's. They went back under warranty..
😆
I'd be interested in buying yours as backups though if your selling (and they do work)?
The SL's are the air ones, these are coil. Probably the best Z1's marzocchi have made apparently.
I think they work, I bought them off JonE last week but i havent fitted or tested them yet. I am planning on using them in the alps cos my current marzocchis only have 120mm of travel. I need to fit them and try them, if i get on with them i'll keep them. If i decide to sell your first on the list.
Depending on your frame why not try a set of 66RC's? Currently set at 150mm travel but can go upto 170.
Its for a cotic, I think the crowns will catch the downtube. They did on my dialled alpine. The old ones are pretty long aswell
Long? Even at 150mm travel they are a clear 1.5inches TALLER than my (broken) Lyriks set at 160mm travel!
Long in the tooth. There 5 years old, I need the latest and greatest, otherwise I cant ride properly.
I can't ride properly so I couldn't even see how pixie dust could help me let alone the latest forks!
have you broken the 2-steps again?
DTF - i have 06 Z1 lights (albeit without the ETA & TAS) and they are the nuts. simply the smoothest fork i have ever had the pleasure of riding. and soo simple you can service them yourself in about 30 minutes, including bush & seal change. winner.
coil lyriks i reckon, push upgrade later if you feel the need but the mission control is pretty good imo.
having seen you ride though hora, some sids would be fine...
Cheeky bugger. Two dabs! The Lyriks were bust on that ride (and remember the chain had come off/split around the rear mech and twisted)* so I had to ride to the bottom with that. On the pootle previous I cleared Cavedale 🙄

coil lyriks i reckon, push upgrade later
what do you know that I don't? Is the lyrik PUSH kit finally going to become available? as far as I know it isn't atm
what's wrong with the new solo airs at 160mm? Lighter than the coil and 2 step.
No travel adjust
Circa 200gm's weight saving is neither here nor there for me though considering the travel adjust on the coil....
Forgive me if I'm wrong but doesn't the Lyriks have a certain mod already that the Pikes PUSHd kit provides? Namely numerous holes for the oil to flow through?
Hang on, are the XX forks not motion control? Seems a bit of a corner-cut, unless you really want the remote.
I've got a set of the 2010 150mm u-turn Teams, with the blackbox damping, and they're pretty phenomenal. Don't feel like they're going to break in a hurry. But I'm not heavy... To me, they're more than suitable for the job but I don't know how they'd get on with a bigger rider.
Northwind, how much do you weigh?
yeah, its the blackbox you want, not the motion control (though motion contol is fine). i heard there was a damper upgrade available this year though maybe im getting confused with the new lyrik dh?
The new Lyrik 'DH' is 170 travel though so a different beast.
How I see it- the Rev will have better damping but be slightly flexier than the Lyrik?
the new rev chassis is definitely flexier than the lyriks, i had some 15omm ones on my five and they were great but long travel xc rather than burly 'ardcore stuff.
never ridden the black box stuff, is it better than the lyriks? i really like the mission control
Yup, they're trail forks, not as massively tough as Lyriks. Hora, I weigh about 65 kg but these things don't have a weight limit, I've no clue how they'd handle a big'un but they're not likely to fail unless also beaten with a stick.
Nothing wrong with motion control, I have that in my other revs, it's not as good in just about every way but it still does the job. Just that it's weird that XX isn't the highest spec rev, all it gets is the daft adjuster.
So back to back.
What does the blackbox rev do better- can you quantify the main area(s) where the differences are most marked?
Ps. I weigh 100kg!
Repeated hits is the most obvious thing, if you're bashing across a series of roots or similiar motion control seems to show its weaknesses the most, the blackbox ones just keep going. Generally they just feel more controlled and that little bit smoother. Which I know sounds really vague and MBUK but that's just how they feel 😉 Very very nice. Not that I couldn't be completely happy with moption control mind, I'm not sure that Blackbox is really worth the extra money but it's definately worth more than the hydraulic lockout remote 😛
100kkg I'm sure would be fine, they're not superlight race forks, I'm sure they'll work with normal size people just as well as they work with skinny bits of nothing.
Funnily this threads just caught my attention:

Especially this post:
Revs are pretty good, but get them in coil. I don't like the dual air system as they feel horrible, and if you make them really responsive the travel drops to about 80-100mm.
I didnt get on with the dual airs at all (had the 140 travel) and if I set the sag correctly it would (in the real world) really eat into the travel available.
I need a fork that does everything reliably (only have one bike). Coil Lyriks it is. Pity they don't offer the coil Lyriks with blackbox damping 🙁
Edit:
Repeated hits is the most obvious thing, if you're bashing across a series of roots or similiar motion control seems to show its weaknesses the most,
Coil's with the rebound correctly setup in conjunction with the motion control should avoid the forks packing down or pogo'ing on repeat hits though?
This is one way I knew my Lyrik 2steps were balked- they were overwhelmed on the slightest ripple!
Revelations are, to all intents and purposes, air Pikes.
XX Rev's have the hydraulic remote lock-out.
What about 454 Pikes? I've had a couple of pairs over the last 5 years and they are an awesome all round fork, especially for 'heavier riders'.
Pauly, its a warranty swap so want to keep the level of fork ££.
How heavy are you if you don't mind me asking, as XX is purely a race groupset? I'd be concerned if you are breaking the lighter weight RS forks, that if you went for XX it will break.
What sort of bike is it going on?
BTW, I have had Pikes, Rebas, Lyriks, and now have Revs on my 4X.
"Coil's with the rebound correctly setup in conjunction with the motion control should avoid the forks packing down or pogo'ing on repeat hits though? "
Maybe, can't remember ever noticing it with Pikes but then it's a long time since I rode Pikes and I was a bit, er, deadly slow at the time 🙂 All the Revs are air now though.
I would stick with the coil lyriks myself. I'm a fairly heavy rider and for the sake of a few grammes you get a much stronger and probably better feeling fork. The u-turn is also very useful, mine are on my Dialled Alpine.
Easy to service too.
Going to go with coil lyriks I am. Indeed.
Going to be a Lyrik coil but obviously not for this weekend. Nice one.
I'm building a Turner with Rev XX's...I weigh 95kg, I'll let you know how they preform
