shifting up is very hard ( no i'm not being a girl ) to the point where the shifter paddle itself will give a little flex
I've changed all the cables, checked the mech hanger is straight everything! can't think why it could be so hard to shift up, ridden on other peoples bike with full xtr and it's very easy to shift up. the mech and shifter aren't that old either!
if anyone has had the same problem or could suggest anything to solve this that would be great!
cable routing?
does the shifter work fine with no cable in it? Disconnect cable from mech and try it?
Also, can you move mech fine by hand if you just pull the cable directly at the mech?
cable routing is all good. I did in fact sort it by the new cables previous to riding last night; re-lubed the cables they move freely when you disconnect it same with pushing the mech up and down. tightened up the cable a little bit as it was slow to shift up as i got a little be of cable stretch from riding with a new cable; and it's back to square 1 checked the cable is bolted up in its guide properly too!
Have you popped the cover off the mech and checked the tension on the clutch? There's even a little spanner in there for you to adjust it.
how is it with the clutch 'off'?
My money is on something cable related. How was it before you fitted new cables?
What wwaswas said..check the shifting with the clutch disabled and if its still stiff, it must be cable related. If not, take the clutch cover off and back off the clutch tension bolt a couple of clicks (do it with the clutch in the off position).
A bit of grease in between the clutch plates does wonders too, I've had to adjust mine a few times since setting it up in April.
Ps. I've got the same set up and on occasions when shifting with the chain on big front ring + middle of cassette at the back, it can still feel pretty stiff
There are only 4 components involved so check them from the front to the back.
1. take out the back wheel, and remove the cable from one of the slotted guides on the frame so that it can all move freely.
2. Hold the inner cable near the shifter. Press the levers on the shifter - does it pull the cable properly and release it? If no check the cable goes where it should and fix accordingly - or get the shifter looked at.
3. Does the rear mech move smoothly across its range - you can do this manually with you hand pushing the mech across and letting the mech spring back. If there is an issue examine closely and figure it out - rectify.
4. Put the cable back in to the slotted guide. Does the mech move up and down smoothly under control from the shifter - if not then you have a cable issue. Fix it!
5. Put the wheel back in - repeat manually moving the mech across - is it fouling on the cassette? If so this is your problem.
It is simple detective work. Good luck.
Is the B-tension screw incorrectly set, leaving the jockey wheel too close to the cassette? Or is the shifting stiff even without the wheel fitted?
Just to throw in a possibly silly suggestion ๐
