Off to Amsterdam in the morning with the bird... Been a couple of times before but generally with the lads for lary weekends!

We quite fancy hiring a tandem for a few hours for a laugh and there's a place near the hotel near central station that does this.

My question, however, is that does anyone know where would be a quieter route that would be nice/fun/not deadly? I just dont wanna get wiped out by a tram/car/moped on the 1st day of our holiday! I'm a keen mtb'r but have never been on a tandem before and the bird is okayish on two wheels as long as its flat..

Cheers

just do not cycle around 'rush hour' peaks then it is proper busy with bikes, and peds, and mopeds, and scooters, and trams etc

Vondel Park is nice to potter around. Could get a bakfiets and she can sit in the box and navigate

Really depends on where your hotel is.

Thanks Rootes. I'll have a look at Vondel Park now. Hotel is just across from Central Train Station.

Cheers

MacBike do tandems. Great guys in the shop outside Centraal station to the left.

Ride anywhere. It's all quiet enough! As above, the Vondel Park is a delight.

Also, two top tips for you;

Beer - http://www.indewildeman.nl/

Food - http://www.caferestaurantvankerkwijk.nl/

Have fun!

I've been to holland so many times but wouldn't even consider biking! The drivers are crazy! If I were feeling suicidal I would want to be on something more manoeuvrable than a tandem.
Please seek out a local map with the cycle routes and plan around the non centres.

Thanks for the info guys! This was kind of my worry Pik n Mix as when I've been there in the past I've nearly been wiped out even on foot!

I'll just have to plan it properly I guess.

I spent a week or so cycle touring in the Netherlands with my wife. Our route took in rural roads, cycle paths and central Amsterdam. I have cycled in a few different countries, and I have to say this was easily the most chilled out, pleasant cycling environment I have ever experienced, even in the city. It was quite depressing to come back to the UK afterwards.
Don't get hung up about cycling in the Netherlands. The Dutch infrastructure, and more importantly the Dutch attitude, makes it really easy and enjoyable, anywhere. A tandem would be great fun.
