Was on a ride yesterday and my right pedals internal snapped at the thread:(( and then fell off with all the ballbearings spilling everywhere. Managed to limp along back to our starting point. Question is I've been riding shimano pedals for 17 years and never had an issue with them. Has anyone had any similar experiences? Your comments appriciated.

Cheers

bikepimp,

I had a pedal strike and my PD515 pedal failed at the same place as yours...the outer cone-nut and the locknut sheared the axle and the pedal flopped on my shoe...I thought I had just unclipped, but it would not go back in. I slid the pedal body over the shortened axle and very gently rode 1km back to the carpark in shame. Like you, I lost all the balls and the outer bits, so have a spare body waiting to rescue a different failure.
This is clearly the weak point on the pedal and could fail by fatigue from a crack started by over-zealous tightening of the locknut.
I had a Cranky Smarty bearing fail by over-tightening the locknut as the bearings went out of adjustment every ride (well, for 3 anyway before total failure).
