IS this only required to remove the cranks?

Assuming you're talking about M970 ones, you only need the screw in tool to remove them. To fit you simply torque up the main fixing bolt (45-55Nm) and use the adjustment ring to remove play - there is another tool to grip the ring but it can be done without.
