"about 25 quid" ho ho ho.

But seriously, is there any significant difference between a 2011 XT and XTR front mech? It doesn't look very different in the pictures.

My past experience is that XTR and Dura-Ace stuff pretty much lasts forever, and everything else doesn't, but I'm not sure with a front mech it will make a lot of difference. I'm looking at the low swing type. In the past, every one of these I've had has gone floppy (but I've only had LX or Deore), so can anyone comment on the floppy-ness of XT or XTR ones?

Basically, I don't mind paying extra for the XTR if there is a significant difference in longevity, shifting quality, etc., but if they are pretty much the same, then there's no point, just for an "R"

Funnily enough I just switched back to my HT which has an XT front mech vs the XTR on my other bike. Both 2010 versions

Functionally the XT does the same thing just as efefctively but it is noticably 'clunkier'. Was not looking for this but it did strike me on the ride yesterday. Can I absolutely say this is the mech and not the rings. In all honesty no.

In terms of longevity I seriously doubt there is a differnce. Barring accidental damage or stick in chain ring damage I think they will last as long as each other.

In the old days, you used to feel like you were getting something for you "R". I had the old parallelogram design one and it was amazing. I don't know why they dropped that design.

They also used to have things like nickle-plated aluminium cages, and the like, but now the XT and XTR look very, very similar to me.

best answer yet. Bit more digging shows XTR does still have an aluminium cage, and that equates to about 20g weight difference. Just over a pound a gram then...
