help!

i have never had an issue setting up a bike but this has me stumped.

i have just built a bike for my wife on 2x11 XT with a shadow rear mech and running a 11-40 cassette.

The rear shifting is awful, and there is no longer the barrel adjuster on the mech only the bar!

the limit screw is at its max to be able to clear the cassette but it just wont shift to the 40.

the 11 limit is fine.

any pointers? ive been out of mtb since 2007 so a lot has changed!!

What length of cage is it? Could the cage or chain be too short?

Will it shift into the 40t if you move the mech by hand? Have you adjusted the b-tension screw?

When you say a shadow rear mech, do you mean it's 10 speed or 11? 11 and 10 speed bits don't mix. Only thinking you might have a 10 speed rear mech as you've mentioned the maxed out limit screw (by which i assume you mean b tension screw) and 11 speed mechs shouldn't need the b tension touching for an 11-40 in most cases

its a GS - normally can accept up to 42..

chain length is good - any longer and i have no tension in 1 & 11

the mech is 11 spd, shifters also.

the b limit screw?

the h and l are good and the mech does go if i force it by hand.

the limit screw i mentioned isant actually the limit screw but the screw that alters the angle of the mech - any further out and it fouls with the cassette 3 before the top..(this is the b limit isnt it?)

GS is the medium cage so may not have enough capacity for your 2x set up.will it shift into the 40 cog on the small ring on front? What size front rings are you running? I know my 2x10 38/26 (12 difference) and 11/36 (25 difference)rear. This gives a 37 capacity (12 +25) and my medium 10 speed deraileur has something like a 35 or 36 capacity so I just make it for big ring / big cog (but really should have a long cage).
Do the maths and compare it to a 11x medium cages capacity.

Reading that all back maybe someone else can explain what I mean better

Max. teeth large sprocket: 40T / 42T for 1x11 only
Min. teeth large sprocket: 40T
Min. teeth small sprocket: 11T
Max. Front Difference: 10T
Total Capacity: 39T

thats what i have so it should work!

im going to bed will think about this tomorrow..

Just looked up the GS capacity and it's 39 and SGS is 47 for 11 speed. My 2x11 is 26/36 and 11/40 giving 39t but looking at the spec online it came with a dgs rear xt deraileur, whatever size that is.

Ah, another thought. Make sure that you have installed the rear mech correctly... Sounds stupid but it's surprisingly easy to get wrong with shadow mechs.

The short 'link' bit of the mech which the mech hangs from its mounting bolt needs to point almost straight backwards. If you've managed to install it pointing slightly up or down then you get a right nightmare with set up.

Photo of the rear mech please?

You may be trying to fit a Direct Mount mech on a non-DM frame.

Ok this is something else that has changed since 2008!
It's a cube frame and I've just checked on the site & it says that the f & r use direct mount... the rear mech is a 'standard' xt shadow+...I'll try to get a pic.

What does DM mean? I just read I may need to remove the top link from the mech for it to work? Is that a possible?

the frame is this: frame

and the mech looks exactly like this: mech

which both seem to be DM... now is it right to just fix the mech straight to the frame or do i indeed need to remove the top link?!

I am no expert on this but Google b2 link. I think for direct mount you remove it and for standard you leave it on, so it may be what's causing your issue.

Sounds like you've still got the B link attached to the mech. On any recent Cube with the Shimano hanger (they do two versions) you need to remove the B link & mount the mech directly to the hanger.
Either that or the cable is the wrong side of the clamp bolt, but most likely the B link issue.
