is this generally ok? i know its not ideal, but the pg990 cassette has plenty of life left in it, and the pc991 chain has worn out in about 3 1/4 months according to the chain wear indicator, fits in both 1.0 and .75 easily ๐Ÿ™ and thats with it being cleaned pretty immensely ๐Ÿ™

the worst wear i have had so far from a chain, wont be using sram ones again....at least used to get 5-6 months from an xt/xtr throughout winter ๐Ÿ™

OW,

XT HG93 chain should be fine, unless there is more wear than you know on the cassette. If so, it will simply skip on the worn sprockets with any new chain.

Consider a KMC chain instead of the snap-rivet-link Shimano as the quicklinks are convenient for cleaning and trailside removal.

At least your SRAM chain has only worn out; several friends have had SRAM PG9** chains fail on the trail....dud batch in 2008?

Earlier PC49/59 were all fine chains, without any issues.

You can join a Shimano chain with an SRAM or KMC link, but why buy 2 items?

PaulD.

Is your Cassette new or old - if old could it be accelerating the wear in your chains?

cheers guys - the chain and cassette pg990 and pc991 were put on together along with new chainrings...

i honestly cant believe its worn that much in just over 3 months - ok ive done alot over winter in the mud, but nothing i dont do every winter.. i clean it regularly too...

first time ive used sram cassette/chains always had xt cassettes and xt/xtr chains and had much longer life from them ๐Ÿ™

If you put a brand new chain on that cassette the chances are that it will just go skippety skippety skip.

2 options - either run the combo into the ground (and it's amazing how long it will last) or dig out a not quite so worn chain.

I run 2 or 3 chains at a time, rotating them every couple of weeks, because chains wear worse than cassettes.

yeah i know its a risk, but you should be getting 3 chains to every 1 cassette or there about surely? theres no way im gonna just take the cassette off and bung it after 3 months use....id prefer to get a cheaper xt chain and have that run out after 3-4 months than replace the cassette as well....

shimano never seems to fail! i will be going back to them next time!

Yes you can get 3 chains to 1 cassette. As long as you change them before they've got as worn as yours is.
I run all sorts of chain. Sram, Shimano Yumeya. Can't tell any difference really.
