[Closed] XT 770 hub disassembly: what am I missing

I've got an XT 770 rear hub (the one with the two 5mm hex-key locknuts) that needs some attention, and I'm trying to get the cone off the non-drive side, without much success.

I can take the locknuts off without a problem, but the cone itself seems to be stuck fast on the axle. There's no obvious way to hold the axle in place whilst turning the cone. I've tried holding the end of the drive-side of the axle (which isn't threaded) with pliers, but as hard as I dare hold it, it still slips round.

Is there a trick to hold the axle steady? Has anyone else solved this?

cheers,

Chris

Not actually done one myself, but can't you hold the other end with the allen key?

sigh... that would be the document that manages to say both

"The double-lock section on the freewheel side cannot be disassembled" (next to an illustration of the axle being removed from the freehub side), and

"The HB-775 cannot be disassembled from the left [rotor fixing] side of the unit" (next to an illustration of the axle being removed from the disc side).

Nice work, Shimano. Anyway, lest anyone else should find this useful, (a) mine (disc version) is a 775 not a 770 as I originally thought, and (b) I got it out by removing the seal inside the freehub, then removing the cone inside the freehub with the aid of a long pair of pliers. Phew. At least now my wheel is spinning smoothly again.
