I sort of mentioned to my wife about the superstar wheelset @ £127, a wee while later she suggests that I get them for xmas 😀

The reason I looked at them was to save some weight which might be as much as 2lbs (I've only weighed my rear wheel and guessed at the front) over my current wheels which are an Alex rim on slx hubs (20mm on the front).

The trouble is to get white rims with black spokes I have to go the custom route, also the offer price has now gone anyway, so the cost will be £160.

My dilemma is, is it worth spending the money to save 2lbs? After all there is nothing actually wrong with my current wheels.

Also are there other wheel options at £160 weighing in at 1.8kg?

And one final question; if not wheels what could I spend the money on for the bike? shown below:

It's SLX apart from the crank, which is a candidate. Oh and currently the bike weighs in at around 30lbs

Weight on the wheels is the best place to start. If everything else performs fine, that's what to do.

However, if the wheels perform fine, put that money aside, save up a bit more, then get something cool, like hope hoops.

Superstar will probably have some good offers on again near Xmas.

SLX cranksets seem to have gone back up lately too.

Were £80 at CRC and £78 at Merlin a month ago.

Sorry, Diane , but I was taken by surprise.

Hey daznal, you reckon it should be lighter? The frame is 5.5 lbs...

I'll be getting an xt cassette to save another half pound 🙂

If you save that weight on the wheels for that price DO IT NOW!!! Wheel weight will be instantly noticeable.

Ok, I've just weighed the front and over estimated, the weight saving on the wheelset will be of the order of 1.5-1.8 lbs - still worth it?
