a frame that gets a lot of good things said about is a cotic soul.it's not an xc machine as such, but have no doubt you can race on it.

i am planning on upgrading to a soul as funds allow (the 26" version) to replace my duster.

Dialled PA.

Great fun!

Like mine so much that even though I've moved all the bits across I can't quite bring myself to sell the frame. One day, it will get built back up.

Can be had for peanuts

Oh god forbid I'll race it. This will be for fun only. Days when I cant be arsed with the FS round Cannock. Nice change to lose half the bike weight etc

On a serious note, the Cotic Soul always gets universal praise. It's a whole lot of fun in a small wheeled package.

If buying 2nd hand, look out for the Genesis Altitude/Latitude frames. Geometry and ride characteristics are all but identical to the Soul, but they were cheaper too. I had a Ti Altitude for more than 2 years, it was a fantastic bike. Only reason I got rid was because I succumbed to 29ers.

The Stanton Slackline looks a whole heap of fun too.

Cotic again, but a vote for the BFe this time. Tough as you like, and can be built quite light.

Kinesis Decade Virsa. Tange Prestige and comes with interchangeable drop-outs.

Go find one, I'm sure you'll like it, especially 1x9 😉

Alternatively, going in the best tradition, I've just changed my Ala Carte to 1x9 from SS for these drier months and it's quite simply awesome! It's so quick! and preferring it to the FS at the mo. 120 forks would be too much for it for my personal likes, but anyway, go steel and something made with some nice tubes. Buy once, buy right and all that 😉

In the STW tradition of recommending your own bike, Cotic Soul !
A cheaper but no less fun option would be a Ragley Piglet.

I've always wanted a Cove for the names, its just the silly seatpost sizes.

Plenty of good choices so thanks, I'll keep an eye out for what comes up

C456? The old one, only £300 at present, with the SIDs that woild make for a relatively light but fun HT for hacking about the woods...

Soul, Stanton Slackline or to be different and recommend what you've got, a Sanderson. I've got the Soloist SS, but the Life is the geared version.

Charge duster - transition on ebay were selling frames off at frankly a steel (see what I did there?)

I'm still enjoying my 2009.

My soul started life with a thomson layback post and spds seriously light whippet but has evolved into a flat pedal reverb equipped fun machine. I still ride the same trails on it but now I pretend I'm Sam Hill on a training run. The point is... it's a very versatile package.

I'm sure other frames of its ilk are similarly adaptable but I can only vouch for the soul as it's the only one I've got.

There's loads of bargains for 26 steel at the mo, I can't decide on which one myself right now.

Dialled PA Classics were reduced to £225, Pipedream Scions have £100 off at the mo £249, and even ON One's evo appears down to £149. And there are still Dusters for £149 on evay too.

To be honest, you would struggle to get a duff one, but it does make a £500 Soul look expensive.....

Funny isn't it? If this was pre 29 and 27.5, there would be lots of comments about how and why suggestion x was better than suggestion y.

"XC but fun" is what the vast majority of riders want anyway. Take away the idea of "best" and you've got no argument, just a load of people saying they really enjoyed what they bought, and they reckon someone else would too.

Makes me happy! 😀

Anyone seen anything tasty of that ilk, in medium, with rack mounts?

OP - you can buy my Ti456 and XT brakes if I ever sort out my new bike, bundle o fun that little combo.. was hoping to sell complete though really.

OP (or anyone else)

I have a medium mk 2 cotic soul in custard for sale (I've not put it on the classifieds yet)

assuming it's your size (and you have a straight steerer fork) it fits the bill (I ran it with 120mm SIDS and it was great)
