Me = Muppet, so IV put dot 5.1 in a Shimano mineral brake,, realised it did it and have taken the fluid out and flushed the system with just water, all I could think of 🙂 because it was only in for about 5mins if that should I be ok to stick some mineral in and away I go or have I busted them? 🙁

Not sure which would be worse, the 5.1 or the water.

Give them a good flush with the right stuff ASAP & cross your fingers & toes.

You can't buy new seals for shim brakes can you? Or is that just the calipers?

Personally, I'd give them a (tentative, careful) try and see how it goes...

Guide R are cheap. Planet X were knocking them out for £35 per end recently (albeit without handlebar clamps). You could get a pair of those and use them on your existing rotors. I’d say Guides have a little less ultimate power / grabbiness than current XT but nicer modulation. And for that price you couldn’t go far wrong.

IV managed to get hold of a rear M775 XT brake for a tenner, I'm halfway there (hopefully the guy I bought it off wasn't as mechanically minded as me), just need to get a front cheap brake now - if I can't get it I'm going to try the one I put the wrong fluid in and fingers crossed

Water is harmless provided you flush it out afterwards. I don't know about DOT fluid in mineral oil brakes, it will depend on the specific materials used in the seals. Even if it destroys the seals on one brand of brakes, it might not harm them on a different brand. If it were me, I would flush them with mineral oil, then bleed them and see what happened. If they're still working fine after a week, they'll probably last for years.

The problem is the seals - brake fluid will normally cause the seals in mineral systems to swell and jam everything up - it would be worth flushing a couple of times with mineral fluid if the dot was only in there for a short time, but my sense is you’d need to replace all the seals...

That will depend on the specific material used in the seals, which may vary by manufacturer. Mineral oil is definitely bad for DOT seals. It's not certain that DOT fluid will destroy mineral oil seals so the only way to know is to try it and see.

These Deore dual-pots from Rose are quite a bargain, if 50odd quid is in budget.

(They're euro style so you'd have to get the rear and shorten the hose)
(Er, maybe get someone else to shorten the hose 😉 )
