Wireless shifting and current cold conditions

How's that going?

Not trolling, genuinely curious after my little Moon lights very quickly flashed up 'need recharging' amber during Friday morning's ride.

Any difference between brands, or levels within a given brand?

Rode yesterday in 0 to -2, my XT Di2 worked like a charm. Me, less so.ย

GX AXS working flawlessly for me in recent conditions.

All my electronics seem to be working well despite it being below zero. Shifting, dropper, bike computer, insulin pump and sensor.

The sensor tends to be the one that gets affected the most, but I suspect my extra layer has kept it warm.enough not to complain about the cold.

I have noticed that the rate of battery usage on my Mondraker Crafty has increased and range diminished over the last couple of weeks. First winter riding an e-bike, proper cold weather the last week or two even here in Dorset.ย  ย ย

Left my axs bike in the car then went out for a ride and was glad of the spare battery.ย

Honestly if there bike had not come with it, I could happily manage without and won't replace anything with electronic in future.ย

A rear mech should not need a firmware update

Worth remembering that transporting an axs bike in a car/van or on a bike rack can flatten the mech battery..ย

Cold weather noticeably drains the battery more quickly on my e-bike. But the wireless shifting (and the motor) will keep working fine even below zero. The thing that gets most upset by low temperatures is the Garmin on its out-front mount directly exposed to the wind. That pops up a warning that it's too cold to use backlight function.ย

My Edge 1040 shut down within about 15 minutes the other day. But then, I'm on holiday in Finland and it was about -23 C. Apparently the batteries on the -bikes that ย we rented will shut down at -25 to protect themselves, so we were told to not switch them off or leave them outside cafes for long in case they cooled down too much!

Yesterday it was -38 C so even dog sledding was not possible.

Was out yesterday in -2 and no worries at all on "old" GX AXS and all performed flawlessly. Wouldn't hesitate to get it again should any of it break as the ease of cleaning, lack of faffing to adjust cables and more just make it so much easier.

Yes ok I have to charge a battery once every month I would say on gut feel, but I ride twice a week (and even when it goes I want charging I've done two rides no bother) and yes when I can be bothered to look on the app it might want a firmware update but small price to pay for flawless performance (in my view).

No issues after 3+hrs with old style GX AXS and a dropper in a steady 0-1'C

To be fair I have had cables freeze on conventional rear mechs on cold days.

I've found the remote for my magicshine hora 1300 stops working reliably in the proper cold. Has been between minus 5 and 8 here in Scotland and the remotes will switch the lights on and off with the long press but do bugger all with the short mode change press. Which is a pain in the hoop.

I'm thinking about fashioning some sort of insulated jacket for my GoPro as I will go through two batteries in half a ride (say 3hrs in to a 6hr ride) in colder conditions.

Maybe chop up an old windproof/fleece lined headwarmer or something...

My 105 Di2 is giving a battery warning in the garage about 5 days after it was charged. Not ruling out some storage / button pressing issue, but it's done it twice now...ย

No issues with AXS batteries, Di2 battery or electric mini pumps so far in the cold temps...

@13thfloormonk

I have done similar for my bar light battery.ย  I used 5mm neoprene as it is cheap and you can glue it together.ย  Added a velcro patch to let me take it out if needed

Agree with above, SRAM AXS GX not a problem but the garmin computer just dies so quickly

-6c this morning and everything remained working for the half hour commute.

Need to check Garmin battery level but don't expect it to be much lower, but I didn't spend much time out in those temperatures...
