So with the Uberbike 20% off this weekend I'm tempted to order a set of there rather superb gear cables.

The problem is they're out of black and smoke outer housing, they do have red though.

Problem is I'm worried my bile will be 'too red' if I put them on.

Here is said bike (stock photo not mine as mine is in bits waiting to be built.... and is a better spec)

Mine will also have a pair of Red peaty lock-on grips and the red accented Uberbike radiator rotors:

Should I just stick to the black Shimano cables I have in the box waiting to go on or should I go Max-Red.....

So what does the STW-massive say?

You can't make a red bike worse than it already is.

Crack on.

Cant go wrong with loads of different shades of red that are almost, but not quite, entirely unlike all the others.

Personally I think loads of reds in different shades looks horrible, but then if it rode well I’d not care.

You'll be fine. Red cables are always dark pink so should look spot on. Should  match those pink rotors ^

Black, until they find a darker colour.

IMO components should be black where possible (or black and silver etc). Colour coding rarely works for me, although matching decals on frame and rims I like.

One red component or set of components makes a bike faster, i.e. red hubs.  Any more than this will slow the bike down.  Science, there.

Well, red is faster, so more red surely means more speed. Crack on.

100% no more colour coding, you have already gone too far with the red rotors.

Bikes should have a coloured frame with black everything else, except maybe some Gold renthals.

If you have a black bike feel free to have red lyrik's or orange fox' on there.

Yes, because if they are like the last pair of uberbike rotors I got, they'll go rusty...

This. Currently wrestling with matching my new (black) bikes currently silver decals to the orange forks

Any colour of cable other than black looks crap

When I worked in engineering product design, we'd often machine stuff out of aluminiun alloy, but the saying was "black will make it lighter" so we always got stuff anodized black

I'd be worried too. Quite so, actually.

Do what you want, nothing wrong with some colour, it makes it more interesting out on the trails not seeing the same "stealth" bikes rolling around

Be warned though, if you go down the colour route then people will expect you to get lairy.

So if you are a bit slow and walk down technical stuff then be as inconspicuous as possible.

I went down the red highlights/components route, as it complimented the blue and red retro paint job in my Trailstar.

None of the reds quite match though. It does seem that red anodising is the most difficult for companies to get right. It runs the gamut from pink to burgundy! I drew the line at red rotors though 😉

I think it works. Others may disagree....

@ajantom those are the forks I'm putting on the Scout. How do you find them?

Great! Took a bit of bedding in, but once they were they're really plush and rock-solid.

In 3 and a bit years all I've had to do is drop the lowers a couple of times to clean the seals and change the oil. 15 minute job.

I also reduced the travel to 150mm with the included spacers, again a very easy job.
