As above. Got a larger cassette that I want to run with a standard chain set and the Ultegra derailleur won't accommodate it, but I have a new SRAM Apex with a medium cage from the Wi Fli range. Will it work?

Nope. Ratios are different.

Aside from the SRAM/Shimano incompatibility, SRAM Apex has always been 10 speed, so definitely not.

A 9 speed Shimano MTB mech will do it.

No!
The rule, shifters and rear mechs have to be the same make. Everything else, front mechs, cranks, cassettes and the correct chains (9 speed chains for 9 speed cassettes)should be fine!

Ok that's great! Many thanks. didn't realise the Apex was 10 speed either. Will try an old XT mech. Probably against the " Rules" no doubt 😀
