I'm replacing a worn tyre and the replacement is slightly wider than the existing tyres. If I have a choice (sufficient clearance) is there any good advice on having a slightly wider tyre (2.35 vs 2.25) on the front or rear?
(the tyres are otherwise similar, last years Nobby Nic at 2.25 and the new Nic at 2.35).
wider at the front, with a bit less psi = more grip on the front wheel going down hill. Thats a good thing.
I run exactly that.. 2.35 front and 2.25 rear.
There's no right or wrong, on a hardtail I would go 2.35 on the back, on an FS 2.35 on the front, more likely I would run different front and rear tyres altogether as they do very different jobs.
Its normal though for you to have more clearance up front than rear, so you can get away with bigger front tyres. Maybe change it up a little with a 2.5 up front? You might just like it ๐

But from the same brand, right? Right? /tyre ocd
I tend to run the same front and rear, but if not an option wider at the front.
