Hi all,
after spending a while searching, I've managed to completely fry my brain. I'm after a set of wide (40c+) tyres for my cross bike. I'd like to set them up tubeless on a set of crests (which rules out the tcs tyres). I'll be using them for the reiver and other 'hardpack' offroad riding as well as a bit of tarmacked stuff.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance 🙂
conti tour rides are big. got em on my touring bike, will be used on the reiver. 700 x 47c
Those Contis tubeless?
Schwalbe Smart Sam. I run 700x47 front and 700x42 rear on my Roadrat.
My wife has those contis (37mm) on her hybrid - they are good but very heavy >600g
Do you already have the crests?
If not I'd highly recommend the WTB nano TCS on a WTB Frequency i19 rim.
Also if you have the clearance, I'm loving the Vee rubber Vee 7 29x1.9 (roughly 47-48mm wide) on the front.
I like the Nanos a lot for the short time I've had them, but read that the compound wears v quickly. Super-quickly, even.

Not so much the compound ime, more that the tread tips don't have a lot of area on the tarmac so they roll really smooth but also wear fairly quick, that perception of fast wear probably compounded by the way they get used on road a lot as they are a good x-over tread? It's not all bad, a smoothed-off centre Nano is one of the best mixed/dry conditions fast all-road tyres.
Clement Xplor. Lovely and nippy (comparatively....) on the road, moderately alright in mud and just splendid on gravel.
Have you got tyre clearance for 29x2.35? If so, you might want to try http://nextdaytyres.co.uk/details.aspx/SCHWALBE-G-ONE-SPEED-GRAVEL-MTB-29/2006
It's the Nano Race I have, (60TPI) should have mentioned. Link to review below
(note that '600 miles' lifespan on tyres meant for racing may not be that unusual - but am assuming the one reviewed was the 120TPI - haven't confirmed)

Nanos +1
I have the Nano comps that my Arkose came with, and whilst they're a decently fast tyre the Schwalbe G-One is noticeably faster on tarmac whilst still being adequate on gravel/dry hardpack. I only now put the Nanos on if it's going to be wet and muddy.
Edit - No idea if the G-Ones work on Crests, but they've been no issue on DT R460DB tubeless ready rims. The Nanos are on gehtto'd rims.
Panaracer gravel king SK in 38c (they came up at 41c on my knesis rims).
Been using mine on and off road since July and they're doing well.
Running a Maxxis Rambler rear with WTB Nano front, which is working well for a mixed road/gravel commute, as well as 100km gravel rides on my RLT.
The Rambler is noted for having a rather loose bead, so tubeless setup can be a faff.
Schwalbe Smart Sam wire bead set up tubeless well and come in a variety of sizes: inexpensive, durable, roll reasonably well on pavement and offer surprising amounts of tracion on dirt.
The wtb nano non tcs go up no probs on a crest. Maxxis rambler is great too. There looks to be lots of new tyres coming out this spring. I'm getting the Maxxis ravegers and Ritchey megabites

If you can find them - Try Upgrade bikes
Or Gravel Kings - sponsors of the DR200...
I'm planning to use Bruce Gordon rock 'n' roads on the dirty revier, setup tubeless.
Also got some Soma cazadero as a backup.
both 700x43c and made by panaracer
The bruce gordon website has dimensions to show if it will fit your frame.
I have Continental CrossSpeeds on my gravel bike. 42c file tread with outer knobs. They've performed pretty well on most surfaces until it gets muddy without any hardpack underneath.
Thanks for the replies folks,
The Gravel kings and clement xplors do look intriguing, I'll do some looking into the Bruce Gordon tyres as well.I might order a couple of different tyres to see how they go up tubeless too, might need to break out the airshot though, as seating anything on the crests is a bit of a nightmare 😉
This will perhaps sound like a bit of a leftfield suggestion... 42c Specialized Sawtooth.
I thought I'd mention this as I have that (came with my Sequoia) and the Panaracer Gravel King SK's in both 35c and 40c. For gravel the Sawtooth would be my choice as I've found it faster but if you're doing anything that may involve anything grassy or muddy then I'd go for the Gravel King.
All of the above run tubeless.

Yep. Exactly what I was going to suggest, same bike, same tyres.
They're probably the best all round tyre I've ever used, the only thing they don't like is mud but I've ridden worse in mud. Nearly as fast as a normal road 25c and good enough for a lap of Swinley red a few wheels back. On gravelly paths they're perfect.
Volume's more important than knobs on the Reiver.
Surly Knard?

Fat bike on slicks?! 😀

+1 on the Vee rubber's I have the 7's and the 10's they were so cheap it would have been rude not to.
Any of these better than others for mounting on tight rims? The G-ones are great tyres but I sheared a rim at the join with a plastic tyre lever trying to get it back on.
Crests really suck for going tubeless on tyres which are narrower than 2".
I had 40c tyres on a set and struggled to get them over 45psi without the tyres blowing off the rims.
I was fine with slightly wider tyres (47 and 42c) on slightly wider Stans rims (Arch EX). Went up very well tubeless initially, no blowing off the rims here. Required air top ups every 3-4 days, probably old tyres not helping, so reverted back to tubes for the moment.

Works better than you might think. 🙂

I was running Specialized Sawtooths on Stans Alpha 400's until recently. Only put the Roubaix 33's back on for a 200km audax & they weren't that much faster on the road.
Haven't swapped back because the Sawtooths are a little tight on the Singular Kite & the Roubaix is a damn capable tyre in the dry.
Works better than you might think. ?
I know it does; that's why I suggested it, it wasn't said tongue in cheek!
If anyone's interested I've a pair of Gravel Kings 35 SKs to pass on. 2 rides about 240km. PM if interested and i'll list in the classifieds.
Planet X have the WTB Nano TCS for £20.
Can anyone tell me whether they are maybe an OEM poorer compound, or a batch of miscast 2nds which have a wicked shimmy? Or are they perfectly kosher?
Yes I have trust issues!

I have them from PX and they are spot on
hope that helps

I'm on my second set of these from Planet X and absolutely no problems with them.
Apparently some of the earlier ones had issues with sealant leaking through sidewalls or something like that but I've had no issues with mine.
Cheers, I've ordered a pair.
Next question; are you all running tubeless? If so what rims? I have H+Sons Archetypes on my Tripster which I have always run tubed, and I'm totally not up for going ghetto.
I run mine on Hope Tech XC on my Tripster
Hope Tech XC only 1mm wider than Archetypes but quite a bit lighter.
I'm guessing that say 700x25mm road tyre also works fine on a Tech XC?

I would think so yes, although watch out for too high a pressure, they are MTB/CX wheels not road specific.
I'd be running the road tyres tubed anyway, so presumably c.100psi pressure no problem?

I ran the vee tyre rail 29x1.75 last summer, they will be back on again at some point, great fun.
I got the 622/40c versions for a tenner each from CRC (same PSA as tang I think) ran them tubeless over summer and was very pleased, I will almost certainly put the front one back on come spring, I am debating something skinnier for the rear though...

not sure if it's the rim that won't take the pressure or the tyre bead
