Sorry if this has been covered before, but I'm after some wide (2.2 +) and fairly aggressive tyres for general trail riding but that are not too heavy. I ride on peak district type terrain, so mix of rocky, sandy and peaty mud and hardpacked trails. Currently use maxxis advantage which are about 730g, I am ideally looking for similar width but in the 600's weight wise. Any recommendations?
Wide and light, everybody will probably recommend Schwalbe Nobby Nic's.
Though you state you ride rocky terrain sometimes, and the lighter Schwalbes are notoriously fragile, and the tougher Schwalbes not any lighter than what you have already. Also, the Advantage is a grippier tyre.
750g is pretty light for a 2.25" tyre that's grippy anyway, I'd stick with your current tyres myself...
Nobby Nic Evo Snakeskin, 2.4 650 grammes, 25 quid from bike-discount.de
Pacestar rear, trailstar front, sorted combo (imho)
Single ply ardents are apparently 645g for the 2.25. I haven't weighed mine to confirm but they feel fairly light. Definitely come up pretty wide too.
Specialized Eskar 2 (or whatever they are called now? - Purgatory maybe?) 2.3 is the same size as a Maxxis 2.5 & around ~675g.
Maxxis ADvantage, not sure what they weigh but they work really well on the back. Mind you I still remember being happy with a toga white tiger which was something like 1.4kg!
rubbish in mud thoughSingle ply ardents
Thanks for all the advice, reckon I'll check the schwalbe and ardent for size and weight.
I have Ardent 2.25 and have used them front and back on my hardtail. Excellent in Snowdonia on rocky ground earlier this year, but pretty poor in the mud I have been riding in round in the North and South Downs since.
Seem pretty light and I like the fat profile, makes up for my limited abilities.
Schwalbe fast Fred. 505 grams in 26/2.5.
Wide, Light, Tough pick 2?
was looking at Hans Dampfs at 765g and thought gee that's quite light.
My nobby nic 2.25 snakeskins are 600g, grippy in all but very sticky mud. Pretty fast too. Not had the same issue (exploding side walls) as with the standard nobby Nics so very happy
Racing Ralphs over Nobby Nics.
TBH there's alot of choice out there for tyres now, Maxxis are certainly no longer the default option...
might I suggest that rather than listen to this lot you use http://www.nextdaytyres.com and select 26" more than 2.25" from the "select products by catagory drop down box on their front page (there are other fields if you want), browse through the available treads in your size range and take a look at the ones you like, there's normally a couple of variants for each tyre in terms of casings, bead, rubber compound, width and pricing and they try to give weights for each and every different tyre which is very good IMO...
It really it is worth spending a bit of time browsing/comparing and trying to decide what you really want/need from a tyre...
I prefere the nn to rr, more knobs ( ๐ ) for properly steep stuff, up and down. Might chuck a rr on the back for the earlstoke 12 next week though
