Hi all. Sorry if this has been raised before, but I'd like some advice. I recently bought at T130RS–loving it but want to swap out the chain ring and give an AbsoluteBlack Cinch 30 tooth oval ring a bash.
Given the T130 has a boost rear hub...
Can anyone tell me if I need to get the ’standard’ OVAL CINCH TRACTION CHAINRING FOR RACE FACE here : https://absoluteblack.cc/raceface-oval.html
Or if I need to get the OVAL BOOST CINCH CHAINRING FOR RACE FACE here: https://absoluteblack.cc/raceface-oval-boost-cinch-chainring
Thanks for your help.
Pete
Great question...one I should have asked last week before ordering the 32t boost ring.
Not fitted it yet so interested to hear people's [s]advice[/s]opinion...
I asked Whyte this question directly and was told a boost chainring is required.
I've now worn out a One-up ring and am about to fit an Absolute Black version for comparison
With a un-dished, non-boost ring i think you'd find the chainline would be quite stretched on the smaller sprockets of the cassette.
Hope that helps, Pete
Ironically you will probably find the chain line is BETTER with a non boost chain ring.
However, clearance near to frame might be an issue.
Above based on AB Oval on a YT Jeffsy.
Basically.... go for the boost option and be done with it.:-)
I've got a T129rs so similar design to the T130 and fitted a standard absolute black 32 oval in place of the raceface 30, has about 2mm clearance to the chainstay and has been fine so far but would get the boost version next time
Yeah Duke, that pretty much sums it up.
My non boost Oval was a bit too close to the carbon frame for my liking so sacrificed the better chain line just to be sure a damaged chain ring wouldn't impact the frame.
Hi all. Just to update you all.
As chance would have it, someone was selling a 30T 'non-boost' AbsoluteBlack OVAL CINCH TRACTION CHAINRING FOR RACE FACE ( https://absoluteblack.cc/raceface-oval.html <) on eBay, so I snapped it up.
However, when I came to fit it, and I compared it visually to the existing 32T Raceface chainring, the AbsoluteBlack ring was wider at the center; in other words, it has a 6mm offset, so I learned. When I mounted it, the chainline was well off, and the chain wasn't shifting at all well. Perhaps I could have simply adjusted the gears accordingly (?), but I was hoping to have just dropped it in and job done.
So I have now ordered the 30T AbsoluteBlack OVAL BOOST CINCH CHAINRING FOR RACE FACE ( https://absoluteblack.cc/raceface-oval-boost-cinch-chainring <), which I believe has a 3mm offset and looks like it has the same 'thinner' profile as the Race Face chainring that came with the bike. Hoping it's a straightforward swap. Will let you know how I get on.
