[Closed] Why the hell cant I shift upto my big ring !*%$! and I mean on my bike
Guys
Trying to set up the mrs bike set up for her first proper off road ride tomorrow but now I have developed a problem! every time I try and change to the biggest front ring, it just wont go!!!!!!!!
I've tried everything I can think of, inc barrel adjusters and mech alignment but to no avail.
Does anyone have any other ideas?
thanks
limiter screws or wrong axle length
travel adjuster screw?
which screw should i try adjusting and which way do I turn it?
Top limit screw, or your barrel adjusters cant take up enough slack. (wind them back in then undo cable clamp, slide through about 10mm and retighten)
I assume that the chain length is good. It sounds like a limit screw adjustment is needed but, as racing_ralph says, it could be the axle length.
I adjust mechs so infrquently I can never remember which screw does what, lots of useful help on the Park Tools website though.
Have you got enough spacers on the BB - if you havent it plays havoc with chain line.
I'm having exactly the same problem but there appears to be no way to get the mech to go far enough to change into the big ring anyway. low to middle is fine, getting the big ring isn't even possible.
Aside from the above ideas, did you pull the cable tight before clamping it down? you may be simply taking out slack with the barrel adjusters rather than affecting how far it moves the mech.
Assuming its a factory bike, there shouldn't be a chainline conflict with her parts i.e. the mech should suit the chainset. I'm guessing then that cable stretch is more than the barrel adjuster can cope with
My steps..remove cable from mech cable clamp, set inner stop (L)**, wind in your barrel adjuster on the shifter, ensure your cables are all seated correctly in the braze ons and end caps, then using pliers, grab the end of the cable and pull it tight (not forcing it though) and nip up the cable clamping bolt.
'should' then shift without needing to fettle the barrel. It should index fine.
**low stop should be set so that in granny granny, the chain only just clears the inner face of the mech cage.
hope that helps
theres some top tips here guys, i'll let you know how I get on ๐
