[Closed] why should I care about lube?

I use Finish Line wet lube for most of my UK riding, switching to Finish Line Dry if I go to Spain in the dusty mountains. My chain turns, my wheels turn as a result. Have I "accidently" chosen lubes that work? When do I know a lube is rubbish?

OK, so never had that then - at least not from the chain. Great, no point inventing something to worry about.

I use dry lube all the time just make sure my chain is clean and relube it before I ride.

there was a time when I thought you used wet lube if the conditions were dry. Why not? The chain is dry so wet it ๐Ÿ™„

Seriously though, lube seems to be obsessed about (almost) as much as tyres by some people. I thought I was missing out on something. Apparently not

I think that some people obsess about lube because they hate black chain gunk. One way to get round this is to use dry lube all the time, but it tends to wear off very quickly in the wet.

Use Green Oil which works in wet or dry conditions and doesn't pollute the countryside with petrol chemicals.

Lubes your chain and gives you bunny hugging credentials!

The Environmental credentials, or lack there of, of bike chain oils are pretty heavily overstated.

Given the very small volume on a chain, its loss whilst moving through the country will leave a very diluted trail at low concentrations. Low concentrations and minute volumes of oil like this are easily attenuated by natural systems, the largest contributor to which will be microbioligical degradation.

Environmentally unfriendly oils are much more damaging to the environment as a whole at the point of extraction and manufacture, rather than polluting the countryside.

It would be a different story for oils designed for engine driven devices,; there is significantly more volume involved, and during use, the oil picks up products of incomplete combustion, the majority of which are carcinogenic/toxic. Some of these are relatively persistent in the environment too.

I was thinking about lube on Saturday's bimble, after getting a bit bored of Green Oil. Specifically I was thinking about chain wax, maybe after seeing the ad for Pedros Chain Wax and given the promise of a long hot dry summer? (JINX!) Anyway checked up on the Pedros stuff and HOW MUCH?

Then I wondered is there any reason not to use motorcycle chain wax, specifically this stuff?

3 in 1. All the time for last 10 years and in all conditions.

Never had a problem.

I use that, but dust seems to stick to it like dog droppings to a blanket.

Maybe I'm using too much (wazz it all over the chain then wipe off excess with a rag)
