Is there any reason to use normal grips rather than lockons (besides a small price difference).

Sentimental fondness for having the grip come off in your hand when it's raining and the consequential crash?

Work fine for me.

No one capable of installing grips anymore?

Comfort.
I've gone back to normal grips and it's much nicer.

Comfort? Are you serious? There is no detectable difference between a lock-on and it's equivalent glue-on grip. The only difference would be if you insist on using nasty squidgy foam grips that suck up water and soak your gloves if it's been raining. I can see only advantages, compared to the disadvantages with normal grips, like trying to get them on the bars, then making sure they stay put, then having to find a way of removing them without causing damage to the expensive carbon bars they're fitted to, in my case on three bikes.

I've got ritchey foam grips on my carbon bars, only 6 quid and they don't slip, suck up water or soak my gloves, and are loads comfier than the lockons I had previously being using. Oh and did I mention the weight?!

I use horrible foam grips with no lock ons, they haven't fallen off...yet and I can't say tht I've noticed my gloves getting any wetter whilst using them.....if it's rained enough to saturate the grips, your gloves willbe soaked anyway
.....I do have some lock ons to try next though......on my one and only bike...with non-carbon bars.

I've never had a grip fall off, but I still use lock-ons these days just because it's so nice to be able to remove and fit them without any mucking about.

The WTB dual compound (slid on with hairspray, natch) grips, preferably in grey / black, have been my favourite for about ten years. They're ace.

I use lock-ons, but I must say I have never had a standard grip start slipping because it's wet. Or slip at all for that matter.

I notice a difference.

Now I'm not using the equivalent grip but I never found any lockons comfortable. Right shape but not cushioning. Not suprsing with a lump of plastic running through them.
Now using a set of old Planet X rubber ones. Lovely. And Sunline mushroom which are nice too and have the added benefit of being longer too. Currently £4 on CR so I'm going to stock up.

then making sure they stay put, then having to find a way of removing them without causing damage to the expensive carbon bars they're fitted to,

No problem on 2 bikes through winter (one bike has had the same pair on for 1000miles from Jan last year until now and last summer was wet) in all conditions and I get round the carbon bar thing by not using them.
For normal grips make sure you use full ended ones and when they start moving throw them in the bin and get new ones as they are worn out inside. For the record I use GT85 to stick them on as we have no hairspray in the house.

If you are wanting use quite narrow profile grips, lock ons will be less comfy due to the minimal space to get the harder backing structure and padding into the space

With something fatter theres more than enough room to get the backing structure and lots of padding in. Like ODI rogues. Though I imagine many with less massive hands could find them too big

I use lock ons simply because I can take my grips off by undoing 2 bolts. Not having to faff about taking the skin off my hands trying to remove a non-lock-on one. Same goes for putting the grip back on again

Lock-on's can be comfy just get the smooth grip one's and not the one's with the big logos across them. I've had normal grips come off in the early days they may be better now days but i'll stick with the lock-on's thanks.

they're ok, i dont like them because they're heavy and eventually start to rock in the lock on ends. oh and if you round a bolt off, i couldn't find a replacement from 3 fasteners distributors 🙁

I don't like lockons. The end cap always presses into the outside part of the heel of my hand.

I much prefer regular grips, plus they're cheaper and lighter. Weight saved per pound, grips represent some of the cheapest weight saving you can do.

I have normal grips on both my bikes, simply because I couldn't contemplate carrying the extra few grammes lock-ons would add to my 34lb bike and 15st body.

Lock ons:
Unnecessarily complicated marketing led solution to an easily solvable problem. 🙂

Yeah, it's right complicated putting a clamp at either end of a grip

More complicated than NOT having to.

Can you really not fit a set of ordinary grips so they don't spin?

Rusty - yes easily. A bit of high flashpoint solvent they slide on easily - the solvent dries out and the rubber of the grip goes tacky and sticks to the bar.

Rogues are what I used and they are good but going back to normal grips not as comfy.

Lock ons are a very good idea and they last for ages in my experience but I prefer normal grips and I want long ones now on SS and geared bikes so I can shuffle my hands about.

I can wipe my arse on a dock leaf, but I still choose to use bog roll.

FWIW, I have normal grips on both my bikes - purely because one set was bought last millenium and the other set came with the bike.

Can't understand why someone would want to piss about with hairspray and the like when there's a mechanical solution. Surely weight can't be an issue unless your bike is a 20lb carbon xc speed machine

I could never see the point of lock-ons until I had to replace some grips and gave them a go. They make fiddling with the bike so much easier, stay put better than I thought they would and that's about it.

I have never had a 'normal' grip slip, but always found them a ball ache to take on and off.

They just look like an unnecessary bodge, dreamt up by someone in a marketing department rather than by an engineer.
Just like enclosed disc brakes on Honda bikes in the 80's.

Also, I hate being tied into a specific manufacturers system and I often ride on the road with my hands resting on the edge of the bars (it's uncomfortable with lock-ons).

Don't forget that they also give people the chance to add even more tastless anodising in inappropriate places. 😉

the metal bits at the ends of Rogues are slightly uncomfy but wearing gloves it's a non issue. Easy to get off/on though.

The compfiest grips ive got are the mushroom gilled mongoose non-lockon ones. Ball ache to get on and off, but they dont slip or twist.

You're right, that IS much simpler than tightening 2 bolts! And taking them off is also so much easier than untightening 2 bolts.

Are the comments about weight saving serious?? Good lord!!!
That must be all of 20g...
Relly worth worrying about?? 🙄
Get over it

Why go for a more expensive, less comfortable , heavier product when the cheap, light and comfy alternative is there?

Getting the grips off again is a bit of a pain but putting them on with the solvent - much quicker and easier. Squirt from the can and push the grip on - wait 20 secs - sorted.

It's also more than 20g 🙂

I have both and like them both.

I have just changed to lock-ons, I had no problems with normal grips and then I did a 75miles route in the peaks, they started moving! That was enough for me to change!

.... look , some people like normal rubber grips , some like 20g sets of foam ones , i personally only buy ODI RUFFIAN lock ons , every time .
Its a matter of preference . I like how fast you can take them off and replace them , or take you shifters off ...

i used lock ones because ergon grips need to be held in place ....

going to put foamies on now though for an experiment ... failing that going back to a new set of ergons despite the weight , yet to find anything comfier for enduros

I hate the metal on outside of Lock Ons. The outside of my hand often hangs slightly over the edge of the bar, so essentially I am riding with no padding on these grips.
Should try the lockons which just have a single lock on the inside I guess. But have heard these slip.
Currrently riding Lock Ons on all my bikes. But think I will re-visit my old favorites which was the original Black Yeti grips.

Algore, Ive been using the spesh' grips with the single lock ring for 6 months or so with no slippage so far, cheap too (and available in white!)

Algore - I intentionally cut my bars down so that my lock ons outer clamp overhangs the bars by a couple of mm and ride with the outer part of my palm overhanging the clamp - I find it comfortable like that and it also gives more range of hand movement when tableing the bike in the air etc.
why don't you just use wider bars?

I've got Ritchey WCS foam grips on 4 of my bikes lock-ons on one, the foam grips are much more comfy.
I've been using foam grips for about 15 years now and never had a problem with them slipping.

love lock ons, you waste a set of ordinary grips trying to get them off when they are stuck on, two grub screws and they are off for swapping stuff on the bars, worth the fractional extra weigh imho

Stuck on? Long fine screwdriver slid underneath along the length, run the red pipe from WD40/GT85 along side it, quick spray, twist grip and it's off.

Algore, it does sound like you need wider bars tbh rather than different grips.

I bought some DMR grips which you lock on with locking wire. no slipping & rubber over the end of the bar.

another fine solution brought to you by Crotchrocket, Enjoy.

I use lock ons but dont compromise on weight by removing the grub screws and plastic sleeve and gluing them on

I sue lockons on everything except my BMX - new one came with a set on it, and there's a noticable lack of comfort compared to rubber mushroom grips. With boingy forks, lockons are great.

Anyone want to buy some white KHE lockons???

I like change and lock ons are great for replacing bars quickly without buying new grips.

I have to cut off some nice good n' evil grips off a carbon bar to make room for burly kit 👿

Normal grips on all my bikes. Well, the two without bar tape on them, anyway. Never had a problem with them coming off and never had a problem removing them either.

Having said that, why on Earth would you regularly need to remove grips?

I used GT85 to remove and put on grips but tried ruffian lockons and have moved all my bikes over except my lightish weight Ti hardtail out of (weight-weenie) principal.
