..on my road bike within minutes of setting off but they are fine all day on my mountain bike?
It's like they're objecting.
Eggbeaters and Specailized BG MTB shoes.
It's very strange.
The difference in riding position should be and I'm sure is all above the waist so it shouldn't make any difference, surely?
I largely skipped biomechanincs. I wish I hadn't now.

Not at all. Your road bike probably has a steeper seat angle for a start, your saddle could be at a different tilt/fore-aft position, and your upper body is connected to your lower body a lot.
