Seen more Clowns dressed in baggies than I have Lycra tbh - and ageing doods with breeks half way down their shins are beyond ridicule. But at the end of the day who reallly GAF.

it's so they can check each others nobs out, thus making it an easier decision who they want to stroke during their mid-ride, behind the bushes gay sex session.

You've put some thought into this haven't you. Anything you'd like to tell the group, sweety ๐Ÿ˜‰

Wrong. But yet so right... ๐Ÿ˜ณ

Isn't that what Rapha are basing their new range on?

Lycra just feels comfy. I can cycle down the shops and don't really stand out amongst the other shoppers.

Ride 500 miles in 4 days then you might notice the difference.

Why is it lycra fans get so tetchy when questioned about their choice of riding atire?

No different to making any other choice with your mountain biking...

Choice of bike, components, trails, terrain, distance etc.

Whatever floats your boat.

The trails I ride are narrow and techy, and damn sketchy after even a hint of rain. A pair of baggies doesn't prevent injury but it certainly reduces it.

What makes you think I was tetchy, I haven't found the code yet that allows me to write between the lines. ๐Ÿ˜‰
I am, however, interested in what injuries a pair of baggies will prevent and please don't tell me that cuts a scratches are injuries.

Lycra = functional. Baggies = posing looking "cool"

I commute in lycra, but then, unlike some, I've got the figure for it.

I wear lycra cos I'm an old git that don't care less what I look like or what other people think I look like. And why should i put something baggy over the top to make me sweat even more than I do whilst flying along the trails?

As a grown-up on a bicycle, and concessions to fashion seem pretty much irrelevant.

i wear lycra because i have an average (read:MASSIVE) sized penis.

Lycra gives you an awesomely crisp tan line and also because it's more aero when on the roady. Also, if you start to sweat, you dry off quickly. Baggies come on when i get back on the MTB.

If I wanted to be a roadie, I'd buy a road bike and be one.
I don't care how they look, why would I?
I don't think they make me faster, or a better rider. They don't snag on the saddle, give me freedom of movement, are comfortable and stay up keeping my lower back warm and not exposing my a**e.

Because you can't get tan lines as sharp as this with baggies.

I love Lycra, there I said it. Even did some DH at Warncliffe in Lycra...

Lycra offers the following benefits over baggies:
- increased comfort, baggies over Lycra won't help, if anything it's just worse
- when it rains Lycra stays in position, baggies go baggies and don't dry as quick
- don't snag on parts of the bike, for example when you're doing some boom knarly steep sections and your arse is right over the rear wheel
- look better if you have the figure...
- shows off shaved legs ๐Ÿ˜‰
- just shows you mean business and are clearly faster than any baggy riders! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Cos it's comfortable to ride in, it deals with sweat/rain well (I mean it dries out quickly), it doesn't flap or catch on branches and stuff. I don't like the way baggy shorts rub/drag on the skin on the front of my legs on each pedal stroke.

Oh, and I look amazing 8)

Allegedly

Oi will, I'll remember that next time you are mincing your way down a descent! I always thought you rode slow cos you were on a full rigid but having seen you on your ardcore ardtail I now know it's just cos you wear Lycra!

How's things btw?

Lycra feels better, fits better ,with bib shorts your back stays covered. Its not flapping around like a pair of baggies.I think baggy wearers just worry about their tackle being on display .

Lycra is just a brand name anyway is it not, Spandex is the real term, or is that not used anymore as it is well associated with 70's glam rock and "Lycra" is the prefered name for the Spandex wearing XC jey boys, ๐Ÿ˜†

Here's an experiment for the naysayers ๐Ÿ˜›

Go out on a road bike (the riding style and power delivery differ vastly when climbing, even tho they both have two wheels) and cycle 120+ miles at 60-70% race pace (not stops, just re-fuel and go) in your baggies, camelbak and flappy gore-tex.

Repeat wearing lycra, jersey....not forgetting the embrocation ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

I'll put money on the 'ensemble of choice' 8)

Haha! Obviously slower than you! Missing the peaks! Chris organising a ride anytime soon? Might make my way up and ride some real trails again!

Well these threads have shown one thing, STW isn't a place for sharing opinions and personal choices - its about being right or wrong.

I was having a conversation about this at Kielder and came to the conclusion that 100 miles in wet baggies would not be as comfy as 100 in miles wet lycra

Actually it does make you go faster, that's about the one fact surroudning baggies/lycra. It my be a small advantage, but it does. Hence skinsuits in the DH World Champs previously.

Ok I am sorry I do apologies, because if really you have this skills you're awesome. So far for me laying of the brake more, cornering faster will make me faster than wearing a useless item of clothing.

As I said I find baggies comfier than lycra, I have the correct shape to look good in it but I can't see the point: too hot, no pocket to put the map and the bars, easily ripped while riding through thorn tree it's a bloody night mare to take a pee/poo with them (you have to get completely undressed).
I have just ridden 1900m of altitude gain over 6 hours. I did just fine with a baggy, my pockets have been most useful to hold the food and having a leak is damn easy.
There is a reason other than fashion which make baggies so popular in MTB, but then seems like most of lycra wearer are only capable to ride their bike around a muddy field for a couple of hours.

Can't remember the last muddy field I rode around strangely.

You really can't argue that Lycra is more aerodynamic. As I said in my first post that's the one fact around Lycra/baggies. But then you have to argue with everything because you're just so awesome, and 'hilarious', well done ๐Ÿ™„

Changing braking style etc may make more difference, but all things being equal you WILL go faster in Lycra, how on earth can you argue against it? Very basic aerodynamics. Do you think we'll see F1 cars with random appendages because their cornering skill makes more difference. What do you think wind tunnels are for? Hilarious jowel flapping antics?!

Maybe if you wore Lycra you'd be able to manage more than 1000ft of climbing per hour, surprised your boast wasn't more impressive. Presumably you did ride it all one handed on your back wheel. And rode some 50ft drops while you were at it!?

No I can't, however it's funny how you cling on that. Although I am nowhere as good as you (I mean if you can feel the difference you're too awesome for me) it make no difference to me. Plus looks to me that a lot of people have the wrong assumption about baggies "dry slower", flap around etc etc.
Maybe you should try a baggy/short that has been properly designed for cycling? Chamois take ages to dry. I may only make 1000 ft of ascent per hours (actually "rando" like it's more 600 m look like someone need to work is math a bit better) but you know what I am not bothered. Once again I'd like to know where do you fit map + bars + sandwiches + pump + spare tube + mutli tool + spare mech hanger + jacket + fleece and 3 litre of water in your lycra and your 3 back pocket.

Why do people feel that they have to a)justify what they wear and b) criticise what others wear?

Because it's the internet and they're anonymous and they know that if they did it in real life everyone would laugh at them.

Are you saying that a Baggy short will not flap around more that skin tight clothing?

Maybe you should try a baggy/short that has been properly designed for cycling? Chamois take ages to dry.

As for the Chamois taking longer to dry? longer than what? like most things different products dry at different rates.

I may only make 1000 ft of ascent per hours (actually "rando" like it's more 600 m look like someone need to work is math a bit better) but you know what I am not bothered. and for what your describing carry a camelbak throw in the bits and pieces. If i am going out for the day fine, still wear lycra shorts because i find it more comfortable.

for info 1000ft is around 300m.

Nope I am saying I never encounter the problem. Chamois, dry slower than just a pair of sport pants and a pair of cycling shorts. To be fair you can wear whatever you want, just don't assume I don't wear what you wear just over fashion. Have a look at the urge videos and tell me what all these pro are wearing for a whole day on the bike.
