Actually it does make you go faster, that's about the one fact surroudning baggies/lycra. It my be a small advantage, but it does. Hence skinsuits in the DH World Champs previously.

I mostly ride on the road now and having baggies flapping around would be a pain in the arse and uncomfortable.

Wearing tight Lycra makes me feel slightly liberated.

It won't make them faster when they come off and shred their arse cheeks on a rock garden 😯

... and how much of their riding time is actually racing??? I bet 99% of DH World Cup Riders wear baggies when not racing.

Conclusion: Baggy wearers are fat clumsy gimps that don't know how to ride. Most of the lycra wearers I know have the skill to get through rock gardens without falling off.
Next you'll be telling you wear pads because you're hard. 🙄

Why do people wear lycra shorts?

Because they're comfortable.

Your experience may differ from that of the author.

Whereas, your baggies will make you just glide gently over them....

Why is it lycra fans get so tetchy when questioned about their choice of riding atire?

No different to making any other choice with your mountain biking...

Choice of bike, components, trails, terrain, distance etc.

Whatever floats your boat.

The trails I ride are narrow and techy, and damn sketchy after even a hint of rain. A pair of baggies doesn't prevent injury but it certainly reduces it.

To be fair, that first quote is a valid comment, there was an insinuation that you'd be far less hurt with baggies, which is of course total bollocks! You may get away with a bit less grazing with baggies in the event of a serious crash, but that really is about it, don't kid yourself otherwise!

Compression effects of lycra on the quads 'may' lead to performance improvements and better recovery from a ride...making you faster.

That and without a pad my ass doesnt like being on the saddle for long.

As I said... you makes your choice and you go ride.

Nowt wrong with lycra shorts, I just choose to wear them under my baggies... best of both worlds 😀

I wouldn't ride without lycra. I'm skinny enough to make it look good 😉

In reality, it's a LOT more comfy (good bibs notwithstanding).

Baggies are a fashion item, full stop. I can think of no other reason for wearing them on a bike.

it's so they can check each others nobs out, thus making it an easier decision who they want to stroke during their mid-ride, behind the bushes gay sex session.

'cause I wanna show of my legs as I overtake you. Make you swoon and fall off.

[The funny thing is not that some people wear lycra without baggies sometimes, but that anyone should GAF. That anyone should GAF enough to post about it on a message board... is a pretty sad indication of the OP.]

Because they dressed up in their mothers/sisters clothing as a child and can not longer get away with it. Instead they now wear fairy suits and shave their legs as its *ahem* acceptable in certain circles.

(cut them off last october)

(still have them in a box)

(i hope they've bred and made lots of baby dreadlocks)

(or some mice are using them for a nest)

(i look 20 years younger with short hair)

when you're riding along in a tight pack, it's much easier to admire the svelte contours of a posterior if it's wrapped in lycra

Lycra bibs hold my developing belly in check.

(I say this on the back of a full cooked English for lunch)

I wear both for long rides. Lycra gives the padding and holds stuff in place better and the baggies provide me with useful pockets.

The sight of my guns in lycra crushes the baggy brigade before they've even turned a pedal.

Why not wear a safari jacket and pith helmet as well 🙄
