[Closed] Who's found their "perfect" bike?

Captain.....I forgot the Mojo :-)...why so many? I came into mtbiking late..aged 43 and saw I better go for it to have my 40s in the saddle ...that and repeated trips to the States combined with marriage split giving far too much time both for riding and for googling and forums....all resulted in a few nice pieces of kit....I was looking for the perfect bike....when I first rode on a 29er in 2006-7 I knew I was close. Sultan V1 followed by a V2 has fixed the habit! The Durance was a possible bike btw but no 29er due to design or a Mojo 29er but Chuck no like!

Dialled Bikes Morning Glory

I had a Mk1 PA and loved it, when a MG turned up for a decent price on the classifieds I jumped at the chance to try out the Ti version and I'm glad I did. Its on its 3rd pair of forks (Pikes which are definitely keepers) 2nd groupset, 2nd wheels and bars - the brakes have remained the same though.:)

Well, I've found my perfect single bike which is a 140/150mm FS. I'd still like a HT or a short travel FS for the tamer stuff but haven't the space and the last one I had (Dialled PA) simply never got used.
I'd love a smash one of the new carbon FS bikes, light and strong with plenty of travel 😀

i had my doubts for a long time, but i don't think i'd upgrade my merlin malt for a long time to come.

100mm rebas, mostly lx groupset and superstar wheels got me down two DH tracks at wharnecliff and it felt fun!

I think i may sell my Quake, which cost £'000's because the merlin is getting all the time

This is mine ...
Owned from new since 1992, but now only the frame remains of that vintage.

When the HS33's finally destroy that rim on the back, I'll fit a rear disc on some kinda adaptor bracket malarkey. If it snaps, I'll have something made to replace angle for angle.

The only changes I have in mind are a wider/lower rack on the back, and some kinda rack on the front, but that's it.

If I never owned another bike in my life, that would be fine ...

(My Peregrine and my early 1990's MBK road bike are pretty close seconds tho').

XL Cove Stiffee from 2002

1: must have owned the bike at least 2 years: since 2002:)

2: you must have adjusted bits on it: Its on its 6th set of forks- Judy SL's (nicked from outside a youth hostel in Sweden), Steel rigids to ride for the next week, Mx pros (bit short), Z1's (too long), maveric single crown (wiper seal fell off half way round GT black run), coil sprung revalations for the last 3 years.

3rd set of wheels, crossmax xl's from 2005
4th set of brakes, Magura louise from 2007
5th seat post- currently looking a bit bent

3: ideally you will have spent many months/years finding it:
After denting 3 light weight aluminum frames in a year and half I went for something that would last. 8 years on, still and seems fine

I've been down Ft william downhill (very slowly) Toured round Ireland and Sweden and done a cross country race. This is in addition to having fun riding round

Blur 4X. Had Rebas, Lyriks and now Revs on it. Been 3x9, 2x9 and soon to be 1x10. Takes everything I can throw at it and I'll never get rid of it.
Think that qualifies.

I've only had my soda for about 8 months, but it's certainly a keeper. The first bike to keep me smiling in pretty much any situation (although the lakes might test it a bit in a few weeks time). I can't stop tinkering with it, but only because I love it, and break things (and am a bit of a tart). It's recently been treated to a new set of Fox Terralogics, and will be going 10 speed in a couple of weeks time. Not messed with the touchpoints since I got it though. It has always felt spot on.

Light and capable. Climbs and descends perfectly. If I was to rebuild it, I would change the grips perhaps (white grips are stupid). And the new versions of the 355s look very nice. But that is it.

Hardtails win then! OCB is the head and seat angle really slack or is that the photo?

I refound it. As it happens I dug mine out from under a tarpaulin in the garage this evening.

It's not perfect for everything (round here I prefer one gear and less tractor-like wheels) but having jumped on it after probably a couple of years of it being neglected it just felt like putting on lucky pants, and I had instant flashbacks to pumping the nuts off it in Morzine.

Big tyres at 20psi to keep speed over the bumpy stuff; fork deliberately "too" short so it's got a >72degree head and steers like it's out of Tron; bashring for big rock fun even with the lower BB height; tight road drivetrain so as to not drop the chain on fast stuff.

It's like a big BMX. Rockin'.

my perfect babies (like many a proud parent I love them even if others thin they look like munters)after many years and many bikes/frames I seem to have settled on these. The scandal is a replacement for a normal 29er one so It's the same (ish) bike as before, just more fun.

My 456 EBB prototype - I'm too lazy/busy to clean my bikes after every ride, so I had idly pondered about a Rohloff but could never justify the price to myself. I had an inbred and the EBB frame came up for sale about the same time as the Alfine hub appeared on the market.

2 years later and i've changed the brake pads on it and tightened the EBB and bolts a coupla times (mainly because of the bike trailer hitch) and thats it.

Think I've been through 40 or more bikes (inc road bikes) in the last 10 years... and I still haven't found anything 'perfect'. There's always something wrong. Think I must be an odd shape and I [s]need[/s] deserve something custom-made 😉

Closest thing I've come 'perfect' to was an old steel Dolan 'cross bike which I singlespeeded (and which I stupidly sold for peanuts), and my current 2005 Turner 5 spot which isn't far off being 'just right'.

Had my Blur LT2 for over 2 years and can't see myself changing for anything except a carbon version of the same if I win the lottery.

Did a lot of research before buying, narrowed the choice down to the Blur, Trek and Giant Reign. Test rode all three - the Blur was streets ahead

I've changed:
Pedals - changed SPD's to flats
Wheels - gone from DT Swiss 4.2's (mistake) to EN521
Brakes - just upgraded from Mono Mini to Tech X2
Chainset - was 3 ring Truvativ, now SLX double and bash

Just perfect for local rides and big stuff in the Cairngorms etc. It's the only bike I have and will stay that way

I will never find the perfect bike as my quest lasts until they stop making new bikes!

Patriot - always wanted one, and finally got my mitts on one.

Does 90% of the riding I do regularly - the 222 covers the other 10%.

Single piots FTW!

This pic is over a year old now, and a few things have changed. I've had this bike for around seven years now - that's the longest I've ever owned anything!

Erm having just splashed out on a brand new Intense, can I just ask - what happens when you own a posh bike and there's not much to upgrade to ?

I've never had quite such a spangly one before coming from a secondhand foes fxr, giant reign, voodoo wanga, Gary fisher big sur , GT I-drive - all either old or mainstream!

You still manage to spend an awful lot on bikes, but nothing on your posh bike will really change.

Or you could start looking at ti bolts and custom head badges and solid gold dust caps.

Or you can just enjoy riding it 😀

Oh Lordy, maybe this means that I will finally have an excuse to buy XTR??!

Surely it's wrong to put mere XT on a spangly new frame?!

😉
