Went out yesterday to ride my local downhill track. After doing a few runs down it, hitting 25ft tabletops, 5ft drops and rock gardens, I decided to have a go at the beginner line. My pedal hit a treestump and my front wheel bashed into a root sending me over the bars and onto my shoulders and face pretty damm hard.

Sometimes it is the easy stuff that catches you out.

After going to A&E I found out I have snapped the end of my collar bone off, broke it in the middle and dislocated my shoulder. Bah humbug, no riding for 6 weeks. 🙁

Who else has the torture of not being able to ride?

A few times. It's not that bad, you'll be back on it once it's all fixed.

I've got another 4 weeks or so to go. Like you, was hitting some dh runs, then decided to just session a simple table. Second go, cased it awkwardly and landed on my wrist. Arm broken in two places. Least I get to watch the tour without feeling guilty about not riding.

Being who I am, I don't have rollers or a turbo, as those are for girls who don't like to get wet or cold.

I've been trying to borrow a turbo, but the guy who said he'd lend me one has been a bit busy and hasn't got back to me yet.

you too ton, hope everything goes ok for you.

I will be getting the turbo out in the next couple of weeks. Cannot bare not being able to do exercise!

I have now decided i will not ride anything even slightly dodgy without a compression top and knee pads. It is just not worth it 🙁

(Mr MC posting)

totally innocuous off at the start of Penmachno trail, landed with elbow square on a rock. Snapped off end of elbow, which is the bit the tricep tendon attaches to. Had to wait 3 weeks for surgery to re-attach it (that was 2 weeks ago). Just about to go back to work, got about 45 degrees of movement in elbow (hoping it is swelling-limited at the minute).

Should have been in alps for the last 2 weeks, then to sierra nevada for a week MTBing in september, all scrapped. All my various riding buddies are in the alps so lots of facebook frustration, and watched more sport (all the tennis, lots of cycling via steephill.tv) than I normally would in a year.

Have borrowed a road bike and turbo to try stem the rot.

I got asked to help a team at a 24 hour event. I was on my 4th lap (very short 3 mile laps) when I slid out over a wood bridge and dislocated my thumb. It pulled one of the support tendons off the bone. Tiny thing, not sore but hand in cast for 6 weeks to ensure it heals else I will have problems in the future.

Probably been over doing the intervals on the turbo.

Broke collar bone 8 weeks ago, pinned 5 weeks ago (the 3 week delay till surgery really sucked). Just starting to ride easy stuff again now. It is really frustrating, especially as I am off to the alps end of the month and I do not know how it will hold up.

Guys - I know it's a little wrong but you've reminded me that my own situation ain't so bad.
Op on ankle last wednesday (result of crashing in whistler last Sept) so potted now for 6 weeks with no weight bearing. At least i could about 80% of usual riding with an ankle brace but not other sports.
Watching the TDF for first time in years is quite good.
Chin up - there may be another dry Autumn wheni can ride in what i hope will be 11-12 weeks time !

Had a seizure four weeks ago. Bit worrying because I'd just got back from a big ride out in the lakes on my own. Went out on the bike for the first time yesterday. Nothing to strenuous, just an hour along the canal to pub for a bite to eat and a pint with the wife and dog. Went back to work today and at the back to work interview they said they would prefer if I stopped off work (on full pay) until I have my MRI scans in four weeks time. The thing is I feel fine physically but I feel guilty having time off. I suppose I shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth.

I did my back last weekend. Didn't fall off but seemed to pull something while riding at speed through a rooty section. I was feeling better mid-week so went out on the road bike which was a mistake! I seem to have mostly recovered now by might give it another day or to before I head back out on the bike.

Was a bit of a bummer as I'd originally scheduled last Thursday and Friday off and was intending to chuck the bikes in the motorhome and head north.

Don't rush back on the bike with a partly fixed collar bone. Hate to be bearer of bad news but they tell you 6 weeks to get you through. In the end mine took 3 lots of 'it'll be ok in 6 weeks'. So depending on how bad it is you might be out for quite a while. It is amazing how quick your arm detoriates so I would be thinking hard whether you should be full on alp downhilling in a few weeks time....

Anyways, I managed to stack it at cwmcarn on sat and rip all the skin of the back of my knee with a pedal. I'd forgotten how much grazes hurt...

I tore my patellar tendon (knee) in February, literally just walking into my house. I'd just started to get back into regular riding too, after shattering my scaphoid and trapezoid (wrist) 12 months earlier.... It's been a crap 18 months.

On the plus side, my splint finally came off two weeks ago and I am gradually building my leg muscles up again. The quad muscles degenerate so quickly when you're not using them. I had initially hoped to be back on the road bike this month but physio is recommending a month or two of floor exercises first. I'm unlikely to do any proper mountain biking this year... 🙁

been off since march with 4 broken vertbrae as a result of a snowboarding incident..

rode the wifes hybrid round a camp site a few weeks ago and it felt okay if not brilliant and then rode my fixie round the car park which was surprisingly more comfortable..

Just waiting for a CT scan in september to make sure all my metal work has bone growing round it...

boring...

Fell off at relatively low speed last Thursday evening which has resulted in a lacerated kidney. Intensive care for a few days but home now with some Tramadol to ease the boredom.
Off the bike for 6 weeks so have to cancel trip to Les Arcs in 2 weeks.

At least my pee is not the colour of blood any more. Looks like black tea now...

Just getting back into it with a separated shoulder. Very frustrating, but very happy to be rolling again.

[img] [/img]

It's ALWAYS worth waiting just a little bit longer (and seeing a proper physio) to get properly healed before jumping back on!

bit like ton I haven't riden since october other than a couple of times on my folder.

I feel off in October (from my folder!) and broke my collarbone - needed a hooked plate - 6 months until they took it out, then told to wait a couple of months for the new bone to gain some density.

At the end of the two months I had my forks and rp23 serviced/pushed, ready to go - then got a Kidney infection! Then had something up with my liver and now waiting for my blood counts to get back to normal 🙁

At least I lost some weight with the Kidney infection 🙂

Hopefully you won't have to wait as long...

Four weeks ago I landed badly on the last drop at Llandegla. I fractured my wrist & separated(grade 3) my shoulder.

Wrist is in a cast and I'm still in a sling, no idea when i'll be riding again yet.

Shattered collar bone and bruised ribs six weeks ago (and I'm just a gentle XC in the woods sort of rider...). Just started gentle pootling on road bike but specialist says no MTB until twelve weeks. Will probably hang on until then, but in this good weather it's a test of patience...

It does play on my mind a bit.I will just have to make sure there is someone with me the first few times I go out. Don't want to be "getting giggy with it" on my own in the middle of nowhere 🙂 .It's really frustrating because i'd just got back to the level of fitness I had before I broke my ankle last october. 👿

Me too, A-C separtion , Messing about at the skills area ( ha ha !! what skills ) really bad landing after the mini-slab and landed on shoulder, basically looked like a dislocated joint but turns out to be a separated clavical , waiting to see specialist tomorrow , Settle MTB trip scrapped in 3 weeks time. Bit of a bummer, mind you its safer than gardening, mate of mine split his face open when he tripped putting the lawnmower away and there was a guy getting x-rayed after impailing himself on 1 inch Rebar reinforcing rod while pottering in garden , went right through his left arm and a bit of his ribcage. You never know whats round the corner.... or over the drop!!!

Slightly different thing (and nowhere near as bad as what some of you guys have done), but I can't climb at the mo due to a dodgy wrist. The wrist thing is straight after a layoff due to elbow problems. These in turn came after I snapped a pulley/ligament in my finger. Which in turn came after etc etc...

Anyone else ever begin to think it's just not worth it?

Having spent 7 weeks off due to family/work/blahblah commitments, I was looking forward to getting back out today. This was emphasised even more after spending yesterday evening sorting out my drivetrain issue followed by servicing hubs/BB etc. But then today I went and fell against a tree and punctured my forearm in two places on a couple of very sharp bits.

A truly odd moment of clumsiness. Messy swelling, bloody painful, plus tingles down wrist and into fingers. Missus is demanding I go to A&E for checkup and tetanus in the morning. Most unexpected.

Was most weird watching the swelling 'inflate' while I removed the two offending bits of spiny twig. Looked like it was being pumped up.

That's quality.

On a similar note, I remember visiting B&Q with my ex about 10 years ago because she's just moved and was looking for gardening kit - specifically a lawnmower. Whilst browsing, she gets a call from her brother who said, "Guess where I am? In A&E after severing my toes with the lawnmower." T'was worthy of a chuckle or two.

Update - been to see specialist , says its a grade 2-3ish , told me not to wear the sling unless its sore , gave me some excercises for three weeks as I could move my arm equally with my other arm and to carefully keep moving it. Sounds like I have been awfy lucky for such a hard landing , only to go back in 3 weeks if still painful , hopefully will get back out for a wee tootle about after then.Doc said that I will have that distinctive step in shoulder when swelling goes down.

Three torn ligaments in my right shoulder have been getting worse so not been biking much, get the results of my MRI and second opinion next week.
Katie goes in to the Childrens Hospital in Sheffield tommorow for a major back operation on Thursaday. Two titanium rods the length of her spine and numerous hooks and bolts to hold them in place. If all goes well she will be back biking and boarding in 6 months.

Yep, me too.

got taken to hospital from a ride 12 days ago, and just got released from hospital.

Managed to fracture 3 vertibrae in my middle back and crack my left hip socket.

6 weeks off my feet, and i've got to wear a stupid metal brace to keep my back together. Just had to cancel my week away with Trail Addiction because of this.

Yep knackered knee. Did the Vatternrundan four weeks ago and tore something in my knee with about 130km to go and had to ride all the way with one decent leg.

Dr's say it needs rest but really frustrating because it feels ok until i try and pedal then it just gives up again. Meant to be riding the On-One Hundred at Dalby but that ain't going to happen without a miracle healing. Gutted and so frustrated.

8 weeks after mangling my collar bone, I started riding again. Had a little off on wednesday and have cracked it 🙁 Another 6 weeks off the bike. Arsebiscuits.

Lesson learned. This time I will make sure it is strong enough before venturing onto the mountain bike. Lots of turbo trainer and swimming for me.

Anyone else off the bike at the moment?

yes I am off the bike too, I dislocated my patella (kneecap) 7 weeks ago, only now I can find I can spin the pedals on the exercise bike, muscle loss has been dramatic, especially after being in a cast/fixed brace for 5 weeks. leg still feels loose, going to be a good while until I can ride in anger again 🙁

I got back on the bike on saturday after 8 weeks off after crashing practicing the megavalanche track. Tore a third of my quad and 3 hematomas, 1 in the knee and two in the thigh were my prize. Right leg 3" bigger than the left at first and now 1'5" smaller around the thigh.
I was only a couple of hundred metres from the end of the track too.
Still can't flex the knee much past 90 degrees and haven't been able to work since, i'm a self employed carpenter.
These things happen though. Injuries are part of this sport and i wouldn't change that, chicks dig scars right!?

Both knees have been giving me problems since April - tried a few rides in the last few weeks, but pain has returned with vengance. Costing me a fortune at the physio, and also had to pull out of 4 roadie sportives which I had entered and paid for.

5 weeks now since I dislocated my shoulder in a crash. Off work, no driving let alone cycling - slowly going mad. Shoulder very stiff with limited movement despite physio. It will be a few weeks before I get back on a bike 🙁

Been on the turbos since getting knocked off.

Constructed a timber batten with a cushion on it across the garage so I could ride on the turbos and support my upper body on it

robdeanhove - firstly hope you make a full recovery.

Just had a look at your xray and what you have done is exaclty what i did 3 weeks ago, frustrating, as i had got myself in good shape for K100.

How long did you wait until you got back on the bike and when you did, did the pain in your sholder limit what you did?

I am told that the deformity doesnt go (how is yours!), but full function will return - i have no reason to doubt this, but i can't help wondering why everything doesnt need to be returned to its rightful place to work properly!?

I can do a turbo session holding onto the bars no problem - but i am consistently being told, do nothing for between 4 to 6 weeks upto 3 months! 'you may feel able, but its still vulnerable - if you fall off etc. you will potentially do irreversable damange' etc ....

Thanks Dave.

Hey Dave,

Mine was grade 2. Tried riding Mayhem after 5 weeks, lasted ~6hrs then pain was too great and couldn't control the fast, bumpy descents. At 10 weeks led TwentyFour12 for 13hrs but bike broke and had to drag it 7miles back to the pits and injured the shoulder doing it, so I'd say 6 weeks to riding, but at risk, 12weeks to riding without pain, but expect discomfort.

I've been riding & racing though as I was impatient after a very careful and well behaved first 5 weeks, so have undoubtedly slowed down a full recovery since then.

I did see a physio, regularly, and definitely felt the benefits. I'd advise doing the same and get it taped into position to help healing and recovery.

Rob
