I have noticed people talking about a frame being whippy. I think I experienced this at Glentress when I hired a Genesis and I took a steep corner fast. Question is why is this a good thing? (Or is it not?) I have also seen comments on stiff frames. Is it just a personal preference?

Thanks in advance

Flexy as opposed to stiff? My 853 Sirius is stiffer than the 853 Inbred it replaced.

Generaly a stiff frame is better, unless it's steel in which case it should be flexible, why? Because the marketing man said so, thats why!

It's not something you'd feel specificaly in one corner, its more that if you rode soemthing like a sanderson life 853 back to back through a rocky section with a Cannondale CAAD from back when they were stiffer than ron jerramy on viagra you'd notice that one felt different to the other.

A bit of flex in a steel frame can be nice but I think that too much can be inefficient as energy that's meant to be driving the rear wheel gets lost flexing the frame (some folk talk about a bike being noodley).

I've also heard of steel frames being described along the lines of 'coiling' up under load and 'springing' away - which presumably is meant to be good. I think that a lot's got to do with personal preference. I like a bike of flex in steel frame but the little extra stiffness in the Sirius does seem to make it feel a better climber (could be all in the mind though).
