Got a new (second-hand) bike and the, err, whatchacallit crank bolt covers just have two little holes about an inch apart which something obviously fits in to unscrew. I tried a bit of bent wire but it's not strong enough - it'll be a long time since they were last taken off. Is there a specific tool for it?

Like that? Don't remove them, there should be an 8mm Allen key fitting in the middle.

I'm pretty sure that those will be self extracting cranks. There isn't really any need to take that cover off. If you want to take the cranks off all you need in an allen key.

If you really want to take the caps off then this will do the job Peg Spanner

*memory fail*

I'll check in the morning. I forgot a headtorch when I went out to take them off it.

Two nails and an allen key or a pair of bent nose circlip pliers.

Couple of nails indeed got them moving, after a dose of spray lube.

They were just covers, like I thought, with a bolt behind them.
