I saw someone adapt an old sram cassette spider by removing all the old cogs and then spacing a single cog onto it. Don't know which cog they were using or whether it was a ss cog, suspect it night just have been a cog off the cassette. Looked good and certainly wouldn't dig in! Or you could buy a steel freehub body, think they are about £50 though

I have a Surly on my Hope freehub which has a 4mm base and doesn't seem to be causing any damage. Very nice if don't object to spending £20 on a cog. Gusset and Halo both do one with a 7mm base but they're both 1/8" specific whereas the Surly works with a 3/32" which allows you to use 8 or 9 spd chain.

The Superstar ones are nice & wide. Bit wider than a King if I recall. They are pretty soft though. Also the wide base is all on one side, so not sure if that might have an impact, compared to a King etc. Surly are meaty old beasts, but pretty heavy though. You could swap the chainline every month or so to even it out.

Trouble with singlespeed is that you do wear out the cogs quicker, recently Ive had gusset, surly and on one groove armada, all much the same. Groove armada at a pinch would get my vote.

Had Surly's in the past, stood up pretty well and never chewed my Pro 2.

Trying out a King stainless at the moment...

I'm using a niner cogalicious my missus bought me for my birthday. Has been on about 8 months, and seems fine so far.
