Fork has standard 1 1/8" steerer.

I'm fed up with the bottom bearing on my On-One smoothie needing cleaning out and regreasing every third ride. To make matters worse it seems to be reluctant to stay adjusted too.

"reluctant to stay adjusted"??

Are you using a tapered steerer fork! Rockshox?

1 1/8th steerer by the looks of the 1st line.

The Hope headset should be on the on one site. If you call Hope them they will tell you the exact parts you need to order.

hehe

be aware with the hope one you need to buy a new lower assembly to fit tapered forks later on.

Why not try a neoprene cover? No one does them for 1.5" headsets yet but shouldnt be too hard to make one with some velcro and some neoprene and some stitching. I run them on all my 1 1/8th frames and they work very well.

18 bikes and the hope web site to the rescue;

HOPE Bottom Headset Cup Complete 2011 CUP D (1.5inch Traditional to 1 1/8inch Stepdown)
HOPE Top Headset Cup Complete 2011 CUP 2 (1 1/8inch Integral/Zerostack)

with the external bottom cup to keep the fork crown clear of the frame.

hmm was condiering putting an inset 1.5->1.125 step down cup on my c456, hadn't thought about fork/downtube clearence, is that a common problem with the c456?
Currently got a smoothie but wanted to be able to swap forks around and not sure how that big crown race will like being removed and replaced. All my other headsets have split crown race - easy!

To make matters worse it seems to be reluctant to stay adjusted too.
do you mean you get headset play after a few rides?

is that a common problem with the c456

Not sure, but with Marzocchi 44 Micro Ti the adjusters don't clear the downtube by much more than the stack height of the lower headset assembly. You'd also steepen head angle a bit if you ran an internal set of bearings etc?

do you mean you get headset play after a few rides?

that's it. Saw that MBUK/WhatMTB mentioned they had the problem in their review of the bike too.

Yep but not much, currently running 125 forks might go up to 140 at the same time so that would mean no real difference.

I had it a few times, have since done up the stem bolts well b***ard tight and been ok so far (only done a few tame rides since then tho)

No idea if using a low stack bottom cup will cause fork-frame strike but you need an external cup lower to keep the geometry as intended anyway.

I can see removing the smoothie being tricky too, the internal wall of the headset is quite thick with a lip where the bottom cup goes and iirc theres not much room between the lip and the top of the cup insert. Might be fine with a proper headset removal tool but not so easy for my usual screwdriver + hammer + brute force method

no, I was thinking of holding the cup in a vice and roatating the frame a bit to try and pull it out enough to get something to rest on the top so it can be tapped out.

Errrrr - this is a worrying thread, having just installed Hope ZS top and bottom cups following a conv with 18bikes aswell, who were very helpful and also suggested Cups D & 2.
In my case zerostack though, so now little worried that the forks will now not fit (Fox Float) the c456 when they arrive.
Anyone know?

On One and 18 bikes been very good answering q's, so do i really have anything to worry about?

Kind of think On One are missing a trick in not providing some advice re this kind of stuff

If it's a normal 1 1/8th steerer (which it sounds it is) it will be fine.

Removing the on one smoothie is really easy it knocks out with afew taps. I fitted a hope 1 on mine as my on one kept getting rough too

not had any problems with my superstar one but the bottom bearing does get covered in crap - I just clean it as part of routine servicing.

I need to get the other half to make a neoprene protector like I used to have on my Merlin with standard headset. Never had any dirt in there.

Yeah - has worked fine right enough - ta. Now just need to sort spacers, but that's another thread 🙂

I doubt an external headset will be all that critical to a bike designed for use with 4,5 or 6 inch forks.

It's about getting the clearance for the gubbins on the top of the fork against the downtube George. Plus you lose a cm or so of stack height which steepens head angle a tad.

If its any use, I've still got mine and it's for sale in 'near new' condition £40 posted.
