As above really. Do I have to use a 9 speed chain? The reason I ask is I bought a 1/8 front chain ring and was told by the gut in the shop that a 1/8 chain would work for both single speed and a 1x9 set up, I questioned the 9 speed bit but was reassured it would work.

Errr, i think im right in saying you cant run a normal nine speed chain on a 1/8" chainring, normal chains are 3/32". Id go back to the shop.

you need a 9 spd chain.

The guy in the shop was talking out of his arse. If you've got a nine speed cassette you need a nine speed chain and chainring.
