Would anybody care to recommend a set of 700cc / 29er / 650b gravel / cyclocross wheels for my new adventure bike?
Budget up to £700.
I’m brand new to anything other than road or mountain bike.
My apologies for the copious amount of /
I just built mine using Superstar 23mm runs and XT hubs. Certainly didn't cost anything like £700 😂
Thank you. I think.
I certainly won’t be building them and I don’t mind spending all of my budget if that’s what’s needed.
The front is “road” boost. I’m not sure what that is. Please help.
Thanks!
I suppose therefore, my next question is: Can anybody recommend a good wheel builder?
Hunt do a decent range of gravel wheels. Just pick whichever one fits your budget 🙂
I used JustRidingAlong
£400 got me 700c 25mm internals and 1600g, (called Monitor) - running them with 50c tyres.
Wheels are well built and have survived various ham-fisted attempts to break them, but, next time I'd ditch the centrelocks (which the original wheels were) and just go 6-bolt.
I’d not heard of Just Riding Along. Thank you. They look very good value and reviews are very favourable. May I ask why you prefer 6 bolt to centrelock disc rotors?
Hunt wheels I have seen recommended before but no stock for a while for the lighter wheels.
Is the need for 12mm x 110mm for the front wheel going to cause me difficulties and restrict my options?
May I ask why you prefer 6 bolt to centrelock disc rotors?
Two reasons, centrelock discs are bloody expensive and there's an inbuilt 'movement' in them unless tightened mega tight.
Or maybe I've just had bad luck across 3 wheelsets from differing suppliers. Also from experience different disc suppliers seem to work to different 'standards'...
Thanks very much. Really good to be aware of the potential issue with centrelock. I can’t cope with many more differing standards for this bike!
Hunt don’t accommodate Road Boost (12x100) front hubs, sadly. I was just going to put down a pre order deposit.
If I’d noticed that Road Boost was in play for this bike and then researched how hard it was going to be to get some upgraded wheels for it, I wouldn’t have bought it.
Too late now. Act in haste, repent in leisure
JRA and scribe are the two I am currently researching, Probably going with scribe.
Thank you for the suggestions.
I have yet to check with JRA and I’ve just sent the question off to Scribe but it doesn’t look like the latter accommodate Road Boost front hubs.
I’m trying to pick my way through Hope’s offerings. Would I be correct in thinking that I could buy a Hope wheelset that are Boost front and rear, rear axle to suit the frame and the front as, say 15mm and also purchase the 12mm hub adaptors?
Both Scribe and Hope have got back to me. Super quick communications from both for which I’m very grateful.
Scribe don’t as yet accommodate Road Boost front hub and Hope have confirmed that I can get around it with 15mm thru axle boost front hubs and then purchase the 12mm adapters.
So far, my choices are: (check in with JRA), Hope, DT Swiss or, and quite radically, for me at least, just use the bloody wheels that come with the bike!
I hope somebody else, as well as me, as it’s been hugely beneficial, will find this information useful.
Just in case anybody is interested (now or in the future), Just Riding Along have confirmed that they do indeed accommodate Road Boost by way of adapters for their boost hubs.
I think JRA will be getting my money. Unbeatable weights for very competitive prices and extremely positive reviews.
