Having ridden rigid for the last 20 years I'm thinking of getting some suspension having gotten a little beat up at the Kielder 100.

As I know nothing, anyone recommend an 80-100mm 29er fork? lightweight and lockout/blow off valve for climbing more important than price

Thanks

Change your front tyre?

I used a 29x2.25" Maxxis something-or-other, tubeless, at about 35psi for the K100. I did feel a bit beaten up, but it wasn't that bad. I dropped the pressure a bit towards the end which made it almost plush.

If I do it next year I'll try to find something a bit bigger with tougher sidewalls and run it a bit lower pressure.

Those red runs were a bit bumpy though!

If light weight & lockout/blowoff is more important than price, I can highly recommend a Lefty with PBR. Recently built up a Pegasus with one and it's without a shadow of a doubt the best short/mid travel fork I've ever used. Very light, very stiff, very sensitive, no stiction at all. Lovely. Expensive though unfortunately, but if bought from across the pond the warranty is good over here.

I run a 120mm Reba Team 20mm bolt thru, a Reba SL 80mm QR and a 100mmm Suntour Epicon 15mm bolt thru.

All the forks are good but the Suntour was by far the cheapest (now on offer for around £170 on CRC. Downside is that it is 15mm only so that usually means new hubs unless you run Hope or Halo's already. Clubber did a big review on here about them, do a search under Suntour Epicon.

Reba's are expensive but pretty good. Some newer 2011 forks are starting to come out now (Reba & Recon). Tora's are good but heavy. Manitou Minutes and Drake get reasonable reviews but i've never tried them (i have a mental problem with Manitou for some reason?). Fox supposedly very good but also very expensive and hard to get hold of.

The suntours are around 1800g (without the 15mm axle) and have two versions with remote lockout or fork mounted lockout if that helps.

i have some minutes and rebas. both good but i prefer the minutes, they have a more linear feel. rebas feel over damped by comparison, but that might suit someone who mostly rides a rigid fork. minutes are a bit cheaper and a bit lighter too.

I'm using Manitou minutes with 20mm axle, but will be upgrading spring to firm in about 20mins. I do recommend them and especially with the remote handle bar mounted lever.
